Jaguars Come Up Just Short in One-Run Loss to Louisiana

LAFAYETTE, La. - South Alabama (13-6, 1-1 SBC) fell just short to Louisiana (14-5, 1-1 SBC) on Saturday afternoon at ML Tigue Moore Field by a 3-4 final score.

PRIMARY THREADS
  • Catcher Duncan Mathews put the Jags up early when he hit a two-run homer in the first inning. It was his fourth big fly of the season, with all of his homers coming in his first at-bat of the game.
  • Jaguar starter Ryland Bozenhard escaped trouble in the bottom half of the frame when he danced around a bases loaded, nobody out jam, and minimized the damage allowing an earned run.
  • The Cajuns put up one run in both the second and sixth innings by way of a wild pitch and sacrifice fly respectively, before Jaguar designated hitter Nathan Wood doubled home Mike Young in the away half of the seventh inning to tie the game at three apiece.
  • Louisiana would score their fourth run beating a play at the plate on a ground ball on the infield to edge the Jaguars, 3-4.

  • Duncan Mathews grabbed two RBI in the contest on his fourth homer of the season.
  • Mike Young doubled and scored for his fourth hit of the series.

"Their guy pitched extremely well. We jumped for two with the home run, and he settled in and we didn't do what we needed to do against him, stemming from our approach which wasn't using the middle of the field.

It was a good college baseball game, and we came up on the short end today. I thought both squads competed hard and pitched well."


ON DECK
The rubber match is set for tomorrow, Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Daniel Gonzalez (1-1, 2.37 ERA) is scheduled to toe the rubber for South while JR Tollett (3-0, 6.55 ERA) is the probable for the Ragin' Cajuns.
