MOBILE, Ala. – South Alabama women's basketball fell to Marshall on Wednesday at the Mitchell Center, 69-60. The Jaguars led the Thundering Herd for nearly 13 minutes of play, and Marshall traveled to Mobile standing in fourth place in the Sun Belt.
KEY MOMENTS:
- The Jaguars' front court turned up the heat early, blasting Marshall with a 12-4 run. Daniela Gonzalez, Tamara Ortiz and Diawna Carter-Hartley each drained three-pointers.
- Despite holding them to nine percent below their average field-goal percentage, the Thundering Herd responded with an 8-3 run to finish the first quarter. South Alabama would end the quarter with a six-point lead, 18-12.
- The Thundering Herd's offense would outscore the Jaguars 19-9 in the second quarter, led by an eight-point performance from Timberlynn Yeast. Defensively, the Thundering Herd held the Jaguars to shoot 3-for-14 from the field and 0-for-3 from downtown.
- Early in the third quarter, Amyah Sutton lit it up from beyond the arc. Three of the first four baskets of the half were her three-pointers, and she would go on to shoot 4-for-5 from downtown for the remainder of the quarter. Sutton would enter the fourth quarter with a 14-piece from the third quarter alone.
- Marshall's offense exploded in the final 10 minutes of action, shooting 53.8% from the field. Despite Cordasia Harris shooting 3-for-4, the Jaguars would come up short, 69-60.
KEY STATS:
- Amyah Sutton made an impactful performance, grabbing a career-high seven rebounds. Sutton also set a career-high in minutes (39) and tied her career-high in assists (5).
- South Alabama shot impressively from downtown, draining eight three-pointers from 23 attempts. The Jaguars' performance from beyond the arc was the best since their victory over ULM (1/10), when they shot 41.7%.
- Heading into their match-up against Georgia Southern on Jan. 24, the Jaguars were averaging 21.4 turnovers per game. Since then, they have averaged 15.0.
- Cordasia Harris went 8-for-11 from the field.
- Diawna Carter-Hartley tied her career-high in steals, grabbing five.
