South Alabama Splits Day Two of Bulldog Classic

ATHENS, Ga. | South Alabama used a three-run fifth and Sydney Scapin and Ryley Harrison combined to toss a shutout in the opener as the Jags defeated UNC Wilmington, 3-0, but fell 9-0 in five innings to No. 11 Georgia Saturday in game two on day two of the 17th Annual Bulldog Classic at Turner Softball Complex.

Quotable – head coach Becky Clark
- On Saturday's two games: "In game one, (Sydney) Scapin and (Ryley) Harrison combined to shut out a good UNCW team. It took us a minute to adjust to their starter, but we finally got to her. In game two, Georgia started out fast and never looked back. These games are good learning experiences for us if we will take the feedback and do something with it."

GAME ONE – South Alabama 3, UNC Wilmington 0
Key Moments

• UNC Wilmington (8-6) threatened to get on the board placing runners at second and third with one out after a pair of singles and stolen bases, but Scapin was able to work out of the early jam with a strike out and a ground out to short
• Ava Brookshire reached on a one-out infield single in the second, but Scapin ended the inning with back-to-back strikeouts looking
• South Alabama (12-6) had a scoring opportunity in its half of the second as Virginia Mambelli lined a single to right to begin inning and pinch runner Gracie McDonald moved around the bases on a wild pitch and a stolen base, but Makayla Huddleston (2-5) struck out the next three Jaguar batters to hold the game scoreless
• The Seahawks again placed runners at second and third in but Scapin was able to get a called third strike on the inside corner – her fifth strikeout of the game – to strand the runners
• Wilmington placed another runner in scoring position with two away in the fourth, but Scapin was helped out by her defense as third baseman Olivia Branstetter snagged a liner down the line to end the inning
• South Alabama loaded the bases after a pair of two-out, infield singles and a walk, but Huddleston was able to get out of the inning with a fielder's choice to third
• Averie Daughtry lined two-out single to right in the UNCW fifth and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch, but center fielder Presley Lively made a diving grab in shallow left center to end the inning and keep the game scoreless
• South Alabama finally broke the scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and took advantage of three Seahawk errors
• Lively laid down a one-out bunt in the bottom half of the inning, stole second and moved to third on the play after a Seahawk error, came home on Gracie Dees RBI fielder's choice (USA, 1-0)
• With runners at second and third after Branstetter reached on an error, Mambelli plated the second run of the inning on a sac fly to left (USA, 2-0)
• Branstetter then stole second and crossed the plate when Daughtry dropped the ball at first on a ground out which would have ended the inning (USA, 3-0)
• UNC Wilmington placed runners at second and third with one out in the sixth, but Harrison (7-3) struck out Carson Fleming and Grace Hennessy to end the inning and maintain the Jaguar lead

Key Stats
• Lively reached base in three of her four plate appearances with a walk and a pair of hits, while scoring a run and stealing a base
• Scapin recorded five strikeouts and scattered six hits in her four innings of work
• Harrison allowed just three hits and struck out three in her three innings of relief
• UNCW left 10 runners on base, including six in scoring position
• UNC Wilmington was just 3-for-20 (.150) with runners on and 1-for-7 (.143) with runners in scoring position
• Cassidy Relay, Daughtry and Aba Brookshire each had two hits apiece for the Seahawks

Postgame Notes
• The meeting marked the first in the all-time series between the two programs
• Lively extended her reached-base safely streak to 18 games with her third-inning walk
• The 18-game reached base safely streak is tied with three other players for 19th-longest streak in program history
• After having her hit streak snapped on Friday, Lively has now had a hit in nine of her last, and had a hit in 15 of her 18 games this spring
• Lively has scored a run in five of her last six games, and 10 of her last 14 games, crossing the plate 14 times over that span
• The multi-hit game was the fourth of the season and 15th of Lively's career
• Mambelli has had a hit in seven of her last eight, and driven in a run in six of her last seven, recording nine RBI over that stretch
• Dunn has had a hit in four of her last six games
• Branstetter has scored a run five of her last eight – eight runs scored over that stretch

GAME TWO – No. 11 Georgia 9, South Alabama 0 (5 inn.)
Key Moments

• Georgia (15-5) took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first on a Jaydyn Goodwin RBI double to right (UGA, 1-0) and a solo home run by Sarah Gordon – her fifth of the season (UGA, 2-0)
• The Bulldogs added to their lead their next time up as Emily Digby homered to left center with one away in the inning
• Goodwin lined a one-out triple just inside the right field line in UGA's half of the third, and came home one batter later on Gordon's RBI-single to right (UGA, 4-0)
• UGA broke the game open with five runs in its half of the fourth
• Georgia loaded the bases and Roose reached on a RBI single when the ball was lost in the sun, allowing Natalie Ray to come home (UGA, 5-0)
• Georgia re-loaded the bases and added to its lead two batters later on Goodwin's two-run single to right (UGA, 7-0), and then scored its fourth run of the frame on a wild pitch, allowing Roose to score (UGA, 8-0)
• Gordon plated the final run and extended the Bulldog advantage to 9-0 with a sacrifice fly to center

Key Stats
• Goodwin was a perfect 3-for-3 to lead Georgia at the plate, and scored twice and drove in a pair
• Gordon was 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBI
• Eight different players scored a run for the Bulldogs
• Georgia was 4-for-5 with runners in scoring position, while the Jaguars were 0-for-5 in those situations and 0-for-9 with runners on base
• South Alabama (12-7) had the leadoff batter on in three of its five innings

Postgame Notes
• The meeting marked the sixth in the all-time series between the two programs
• Georgia now has five of the 12 home runs surrendered by Jaguar pitching
• With her leadoff walk, Lively extended her reached-base safely streak to 19 games, moving her into a tie with five others for 13th-longest streak at South in the category
• Dees has had a hit in five of her last seven, and recorded at least one hit in 13 of her 19 games this spring
