South Alabama Falls to Cougar Walk-Off in Series Finale

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston (3-5) walked-off South Alabama (5-2) in the bottom of the ninth to take Sunday's series finale by a score of 6-7, after the Jaguars took the first two games of the series.

PRIMARY THREADS
  • The Cougars took their first lead of the series off of Jaguar right-hander Daniel Gonzalez in the third inning of Sunday's contest, when a wild pitch and Cougar catcher Dylan Johnson single brought home two.
  • Gonzalez would battle through five innings and 93 pitches to give the Jags a great effort in his outing only allowing those two earned runs and five hits.
  • The Jaguar half of the fifth would see a four-spot all with two outs, starting with Marc Stephens who singled home teammates Ethan Melton and Brennon Wright, who also reached on singles of their own. Stewart Puckett reached on a Cougar center fielder error that plated Stephens before Paxton Bigby singled home Puckett to make it a 4-2 game.
  • Puckett would hit a solo homer for his second of the series in the seventh, but the Cougars answered with an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning.
  • Blake Guerin scored on a balk from Cougars pitcher Kaden Myers in the eighth before the Cougar offense plated two in the home half of the inning to make it a 6-5 Jaguar lead heading into the ninth.
  • Dylan Johnson doubled to lead off the bottom of the ninth, which brought up left-handed hitter Braeden Smith who hit a walk-off homer into right field to win it for Charleston.

KEY STATS
  • A three-hit effort from Jaguar leadoff hitter Brennon Wright tallied six hits in the weekend series, and pushed his hitting streak to four games.
  • Five Jaguars collected two hit games in the setback, highlighted by a Puckett homer and a double and a run scored from center fielder Ethan Melton.
  • Mike Young singled on Sunday to extend his hitting streak to five games.
  • Cougar reliever Kayden Myers (W, 1-1) earned the win will Jaguar righty Andrew Floyd (L, 0-1) took the loss.
