Goode Earns First-Career Win, Garmon Slams the Door in Victory Over SLU

HAMMOND, La. - South Alabama (6-2) pulled away with the Tuesday night victory over Southeastern Louisiana (2-6) in a back and forth contest.

PRIMARY THREADS
  • Both clubs put up crooked numbers in the second inning. The Jaguar half of the inning saw yet another double and RBI from first baseman Blake Guerin, before a fielding error in right field off the bat of Ethan Melton plated Guerin and Rett Johnson. In the home half of the inning, Lion bats answered with four runs on four hits to make it a 3-4 Lion lead.
  • The bats continued in the fourth inning when Rett Johnson recorded a sacrifice fly to plate Mike Young, who reached on a walk. Nate Wood drew a walk and Brennon Wright was hit by a pitch to load the bases in the inning with two outs for Duncan Mathews, who ripped a three-RBI double to left center field to clear the bases.
  • Ryland Bozenhard entered for Hayden O'Dell and allowed two runs on two hits in the fourth, but settled in otherwise and went three innings on one walk and one punchout.
  • Freshman southpaw Bray Goode was next out of the Jaguar bullpen and took over in the sixth inning and delivered 2.2 innings of strong work to credit his first-career win to his line.
  • Brian Garmon slammed the door in a four-out save for his first of the season, retiring the Lion offense in 1-2-3 fashion in the ninth.

KEY STATS
  • Bray Goode (W, 1-0) earned his first-career win while Triston Todorowski (L, 0-1) recorded the loss.
  • Shortstop Marc Stephens tallied two hits in the win, totaling his ninth on the season.
  • Stewart Puckett increased his hit streak to eight games, recording a hit in every game this season after a hit in five at-bats tonight.
  • Brennon Wright has reached base safely in all eight games this season, collecting a 1-3 effort in the contest.
  • Brian Garmon earned his first save of the season.

QUOTABLE
HEAD COACH MARK CALVI
On Goode and Garmon out of the bullpen:
"Bray was outstanding. He has guts, unfazed, since day one he's been really good. And Garmon ran towards it. Went an inning and a third against the teeth of their lineup and was outstanding, getting knocked down last week and getting back up and being the guy tonight."

ON DECK
The Jaguars return to Stanky Field for a four game home stretch, starting with a turn around midweek hosting Tulane tomorrow, Feb. 25. Junior right-hander Zach Stevens is the probable for South Alabama.
