MOBILE, Ala. | South Alabama used big first innings in each of its games Saturday to complete the sweep on day two of the South Alabama Invitational held at Jaguar Field.
The Jaguars (10-5) used a seven-run first inning in the opener en route to an 8-0, run-rule victory over Loyola (6-8), and then a four-run opening frame as they earned an 8-3 win over UT Martin (9-5) in the nightcap.
South Alabama head coach
Becky Clark also picked up career win No. 750 with the win over UTM.
Quotable – head coach Becky Clark
- On the two wins: "I thought today was a great day all of the way around. We had solid starting pitching in both games and our offense applied pressure all day. I'm proud of our effort and execution on both sides of the ball. Tomorrow will be another test as we play a solid North Alabama team and I look forward to us keeping the momentum moving forward."
Sophomore C Ansleigh Smith
- On the strong pitching starts giving the offense momentum: "One thing we've talked about as a team is setting the tone. When one of our pitchers goes out and retires the first batter, and then gets a three-up, three-down, that gives us momentum offensively headed to the bottom of the inning."
- On the quick start offensively in both games: "Coach (Kristina) McCain has been talking to us about getting into attack mode and staying there; to not sit back and just get after it. When we're being aggressive is when we're really good offensively. We decided to come out and support out pitchers (offensively) early, and be aggressive and play as a team."
