Miller, Shineflew Dominant in Saturday’s Victory Over Cougars to Secure Series Win

CHARLESTON, S.C. - An overcast day with the Charleston wind blowing in from the outfield set up a dream day for the hurlers on Saturday afternoon's contest, which resulted in South Alabama securing the series with a victory.

PRIMARY THREADS
  • Blake Guerin continued his Charleston tear, when he singled home Jaguar designated hitter Paxton Bigby who scored from second, and doubled home Stewart Puckett and Bigby again for three RBI on his day.
  • Junior southpaw Max Miller settled in nicely in his second start of the season and sat down 15 of the 19 hitters he saw in 5.0 innings of work and allowed just three three hits, one earned run, two walks and struck out five.
  • Coach Calvi followed Miller with a second Jaguar left-hander in Jaxon Shineflew who took over entering the sixth inning. The junior put up zero's in the sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth to secure the series win and Saturday victory.

KEY STATS
  • Guerin has a total of five hits in the first two games of the series alongside six RBI in that span.
  • Max Miller (W, 1-1) recorded the win in a strong outing while Carson Bryant (L, 0-1) took the loss surrendering three runs on five hits in 3.1 innings pitched.
  • Jaxon Shineflew did not allow a hit in four innings of dominant, scoreless baseball to earn his first save of the year. He sat down 11 straight to slam the door on the Cougar offense.
  • Mike Young has a team-leading 11 hits after a 1-4 showing today. He's recorded four multi-hit games of the first six games this season, hitting .423. Leadoff hitter Brennon Wright also has four multi-hit games, and is just a knock back of Young with 10, hitting a team-best .435.
  • The pitcher's conditions marked the first game this year without a Jaguar home run. The offense has 11 long balls in the first six games, which leads the Sun Belt.

QUOTABLE
HEAD COACH MARK CALVI
On the performance from Max Miller and Jaxon Shineflew:

"He's (Miller) is a competitor. He's a heck of a pitcher, and you got to see some of that today. Shineflew was outstanding. That's what he is, right there. He developed a changeup that he can slow guys down with now and it's nasty."

"Tomorrow's the most important game that we have all year long. We'll see if our guys are satisfied with two or do they want to go to the next level tomorrow? So that's what I'm looking for."

ON DECK
The Jags are set for a 12:00 p.m. (CT) first pitch tomorrow, Feb. 22. Junior right-hander Daniel Gonzalez (1-0 0.00 ERA) will take the hill for the Jags, and RHP Jace Stancil (0-1, 9.00 ERA) is the probable for Charleston.
