South Drops Both Legs of Saturday Doubleheader at Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W.V. - South Alabama (17-23, 7-13 SBC) dropped both games of the Saturday doubleheader, as Marshall (22-22, 8-12) claimed the series with a 10-2 win and a 4-2 win.

The first game started strong for the Jags with a leadoff walk and a two-run Rett Johnson homer. A three-run shot for Marshall gave them the lead in the second, where they rode on with the lead for the final seven innings.

South was retired in order from the fourth to the seventh inning, with only a walk in the seventh and single in the eighth giving the Jaguar offense life across the final six innings.

Marshall continued to mount runs as the final score was 10-2 in favor of the Thundering Herd.

The Herd jumped quick to a 3-0 lead in game two, with the Jags unable to respond until the fifth inning. With leadoff batters reaching base in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, South scored one run in the fifth with a John Smith III RBI double, then a wild pitch in the sixth pulling the score to only a 3-2 Marshall lead, with the tying run at third base. Before scoring, Marshall was able to get out of the inning, then add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.

South Alabama put the tying run on base in the eighth but came up empty as Marshall held on down the line to the 4-2 win.

Win: Bryce Blevins (4-5)
Loss: Jaxon Shineflew (3-3)

Game 2

QUOTES
Head Coach Mark Calvi

Thoughts on the pitching and overall performance from both games: Shineflew was a little bit off today. Didn't have his best stuff. They took advantage of some mistakes. He competed hard. They've got one of the better pitching staffs in the league. So we know we don't have a whole lot of room to give. But I've seen Shineflew better, no doubt about it, but I give him credit. He hung in there, competed hard, and then it got away from us a little bit there, you know, the last third of the game. But the second game, I thought Mitch, aside from the first inning, you know, Mitch and Gillis, I thought we pitched, no doubt, the second game well enough, you know, we were in position to win. We had some chances. We had some guys on. It's not like we were stuffed. We lined out. You know, we had some good at bats. We lined out five or six times, and just didn't have a whole lot to show for it. Today was one of those tough offensive days, you know, where I give Marshall's pitching staff credit, they did a really nice job, and we had our guys competing at the plate. We just didn't have a whole lot to show for it. Like I said, we got some guys on. We just were lacking that big hit, you know, that big moment, that ball that just just misses the guy's glove instead of laying out and catching it, you know, inning extenders with an RBI with two outs. And it's something we did last weekend a lot, and something that we didn't do today so but, you know, we still have a game left, and I like what we have down on the pin. I love our starter. And again, I thought our starters, you know, kept us in position today, especially in game two, and we'll need more of the same tomorrow. We'll need Willingham to give us a good one. We've got plenty, you know, down in the pen, we've got plenty on the mound, and I like our chances tomorrow. I know they have a very good staff, but we're gonna do everything we can to avoid getting swept on the road.
