Jags Offense Stagnate in 0-4 Series Finale Loss at Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W.V. - South Alabama (17-24, 7-14 SBC) struggled to find it's offensive spark leaving eight stranded in the third loss to Marshall (23-22, 9-12 SBC).

Zach Willingham worked as the starting pitcher, going 5.2 innings with six hits, three runs, three walks, and a strikeout. Marshall scored the first two runs in the third inning, then scored one more in the sixth.

The Jaguar offense had little production, with only three hits across the first seven innings. Duncan Mathews and Ty Brooks knocked singles in the second and fifth innings, respectively, and Ethan Melton was left stranded after driving a triple into the left-center power alley in the seventh inning.

Another infield hit for Marshall scored their fourth run in the bottom of the seventh inning. South was unable to respond in the final two innings as the score went final 4-0.

Win: Clint Moak (2-1)
Loss: Zach Willingham (3-5)

QUOTES
Head Coach Mark Calvi

Overall thoughts: This was the second game in a row we pitched well enough to win. We really did. Willingham gave us a really solid start. We were good out of the bullpen. Now I give Marshall's pitchers credit. You know, we had some decent at bats. We lined out seven times with some early outs. I thought we would have been better against their starters. Nothing special. He had good numbers. He was solid. But he just, you know, it was tough to get hits today. It was tough to string things together. He didn't walk anybody. I think he hit one and walked one and, you know, they only walked one today, and the inning that they scored, you know, we had a single and a walk in there. Unfortunately, we couldn't afford to give up a whole lot today, and I didn't think we'd get shut out, but their guys pitched really well, and we had a tough day at the plate. Again, we had some good at bats, but just not a whole lot to show for it.

On Marshall's 4-13 day with runners on and South's 0-11 day with runners on: Yeah, that's the deciding factor of the game, right there. I mean, you saw last weekend. I think we had 21 two-out RBIs over the weekend, and I think we got three or four, five lead off men on all (this) weekend. It's tough, you know, they did a great job getting after our leadoff guy, not that they were all bad at bats. The results just didn't go our way. And you know, when you start in the inning with one out and nobody on against good pitching, it's tough to mount a comeback, you know, and they're not walking many guys. They didn't give much, they didn't make many errors. So there weren't a whole lot of free passes in there. They didn't hurt themselves. And you know, there were a couple windows in there that we didn't take advantage of, and, you know we had some batted bats at the wrong time we had we had plenty of good at bats, we just didn't have it, as many as we needed when it counted and that was the that was the storyline all weekend.
