South Alabama Takes Rubber Match in Ruston Over Louisiana Tech

RUSTON, La. - The Jags (9-6) set the tone early and coasted the rest of the way in a 8-2 win over Louisiana Tech (9-7).

South was productive at the plate, with leadoff hitters reaching base in the first, second and fourth innings early. South profited with a run scored in the eighth by a Duncan Mathews RBI single, and five runs scored in the fourth inning.

The first four batters in the fourth reached safely, with the fourth (Mathews) getting plunked for an RBI. A fielder's choice cleared up a base, but Brennan Holt walked to fill them up again. Duncan Mathews dove home on a wild pitch, and Kyle Morrison doubled to score the other two runs.

The Jaguar offense scored six runs in support of Chase Davis' start. Davis went 4.2 innings with three hits, one walk, and no runs allowed earning his first career win along with two strikeouts.

Brennan Holt opened up the sixth inning lasering a home run to right-center for the 7-0 lead, then later doubled in the ninth inning to score one more run for the 8-0 lead going into the bottom of the ninth.

The Bulldogs scored two compensatory runs before Andrew Floyd struck out the final two batters.

Win: Chase Davis (1-1)
Loss: Brooks Roberson (0-1)

QUOTES
Head Coach Mark Calvi

On the game today: We faced a really good pitcher (Roberson). They all have good arms. You know, all Louisiana Tech arms are good, and they mix really well. Good off speed. This guy was a really good freshman. We had some great at bats. We had a bunch of two strike hits early, and we just, we just saw a bunch of pitches. We had his pitches up through three (innings). He was around 60 something pitches through three, and even though he had the eight pitch second or third. So I just thought our approach offensively was outstanding. Our guys just worked and worked and worked. Nobody gave an at-bat away and it's contagious. You pass it down the line, and one guy kind of gives the blueprint, even though you have a good plan going in. But I thought our guys followed instructions really well. The coaches did a great job with the approach and the plan, but it's all about the players executing it.

On the pitching today: On defense, our pitching was outstanding. Chase Davis was really, really good. Would have loved to have let him finish the fifth, but I'm thinking about his health and his career. He was outstanding for four and two thirds. I thought Garmin was, was exceptional coming out of the bullpen today. He was really, really good. Picked up a split two weeks ago, and he's starting to use it right now. So Garmin was really good, and then, and then Floyd was really good coming in behind (Andrew) Elkhill. So it was a complete game. I thought we had great energy in the dugout, and, you know, their strength in numbers. So I think we got closer as a team. Our guys learned a lot more about each other, and especially the guys who aren't playing. There was great energy in the dugout and wanting to win, and that's what it takes to put the uniform on, not just to play game three against Louisiana Tech or game 13 or 12 or whatever it is, but or 15, you put it on to win the game. And that's what our guys did this weekend. And proud of their effort, really proud of their effort. You know, going on the road, good crowd, tough team.
