South Alabama Rolls No. 13 Ole Miss in Midweek Clash, 14-5

MOBILE, Ala. - South Alabama thumped offensively with 14 hits to match their 14 runs along a nine-run victory, handing No. 13 Ole Miss.

The Jags worked early on establishing the lead, with a 4-0 lead on a single, sac fly, fielder's choice, and another single. Continuing on throughout the game, South scored in six of the eight innings, including the first three.

The second inning saw an RBI double from Brennan Holt, and one run was scored in the third off a Duncan Mathews single.

Defensively, Tyler Smith pitched 4.2 innings, only allowing a walk in his first three, and held the Rebel offense at bay until the fifth inning. Jaxon Shineflew took over and worked out of a jam before Dalton Brooks held steady with 3.2 innings of one-hit, no-run ball.

Responding to the Rebels' two-run fifth inning, the Jags scored three off a sac fly-turned error ro the outfield, then a two-RBI single from Ty Brooks.

Brennan Holt struck a triple to left-center for a run in the seventh, then South Alabama added the final four runs on a flurry of Jags reaching base. Mathews knocked another run in, followed by a Brooks RBI double. In a bases loaded situation, John Smith III walked in an RBI and Kyle Morrison scored the final run via sac fly.

Win: Tyler Smith (2-0)
Save: Dalton Brooks (1)
Loss: Taylor Rabe (0-1)

QUOTES
Head Coach Mark Calvi

On the win over a ranked team: I mean, it's a big win. It's just one win, not a statement win. We won against a good team. Coach Bianco, I've known him forever, got the most respect for him out of any coach in the SEC because he'll come here and play. It wasn't like they're on their way somewhere or a double midweek, they came down to play us at our home field. That's why he's been in it so long, man, he respects others, and he runs a great program. We're just, we're really happy to beat an outstanding team game.

On the pitching staff's performance: You know, the game starts and stops on the mound. You've heard me say it 1000 times and today was no different. Tyler Smith was outstanding on a tough day. Wind was blowing out and all get out. Smitty made enough pitches. He was really good with his slider. Shineflew came in and bailed us out with that F8- little shaky defensively, today for both teams. Shineflew probably deserved a better fate, but DB (Dalton Brooks) was in behind him. Brooks was absolutely outstanding, and just super proud of our effort.

On the offensive renaissance over the last two weeks: Offensively, we faced some good arms. You know, they weren't just pitching off, you know, they were using some guys that they've used there in the middle, and our guys just stuck their nose in there and battled and battled and grinded. Some guys are starting to settle in. The guys at the bottom (of the lineup) have really added length to our lineup. And then guys like Zambo in the middle there is he a four hole hitter? I don't know, he's just a good hitter, and he gives you a great at bat, and he lengthens the lineup, and when those guys are doing their job, and you get to the bottom, I mean, Duncan Matthews is a different guy right now. You know, sophomore Ty Brooks is a different player and Greg Pettay, they're all different than what they were either last year, or in the fall, or early spring. They're all different. Some guys have really settled in offensively. They're not pressing, they're not pushing, they're not worried that if they have a bad day they're not going to play tomorrow, and we have other guys that can play. We have other good players that are on the bench right now. We have depth, but the guys that are in there right now just aren't worried about anything other than doing what they need to do to help the team win. And that is the right approach. That is the right mindset. With that mindset, you know, this team has a chance.
