BATON ROUGE, La. | South Alabama softball dropped both games of a doubleheader Friday on day one of the LSU Round Robin at Tiger Park, falling 2-0 in the opener and 18-4 in five innings in game two.
No. 4 LSU 2, South Alabama 0
LSU (20-1) scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second and Sydney Berzon (8-0) made it stick for the Tigers as she tossed two-hit shutout versus South Alabama (11-11).
How It Happened
•
Olivia Branstetter drew a two-out walk in the top of the first and then moved into scoring position with a stolen base, but she was left there as LSU's Berzon recorded a strikeout to end the inning
• Danieca Coffey and Jayden Laneaux both walked to begin the Tigers' half of the first.
Sydney Scapin (0-2) retired the next two batters before issuing her third walk of the inning, this one to McKenzie Redoutey to load the bases, but the freshman righty was able to strand the runners with a pop up on the infield
• Like the opening inning, LSU drew back-to-back walks to start its half of the second, and with one out in the inning, Coffey bounced a hard-hit ball back up the middle that deflected off Scapin's glove and rolled into shallow right field, allowing Sierra Daniel to score on the play. Maddoz McKee then came home on the play after a Jaguar error on the throw down to second attempting to get Coffey (LSU, 2-0), which wasn't fielded cleanly.
•
Presley Lively broke up the no-hit bid by Berzon with a single to center and
Gabby Stagner was then hit by a pitch to put a pair aboard with two outs in the top of the sixth, but Berzon worked out of the jam with a strikeout looking.
• LSU loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom half of the sixth, but Scapin was able to work out of the jam as she induced a pop out to short.
•
Amity White extended the game and brought the tying run to the plate as she beat out an infield single with two outs, which snapped a 0-for-15 streak for the Jaguar leftfielder. After a lengthy battle with
Ansleigh Smith, Berzon was able to end the game with her ninth strike out of the contest.

No. 4 LSU 18, South Alabama 4 (5 inn.)
LSU (21-1) jumped out early posting multi-run innings in each of the first three innings en route to an 18-4 win over South Alabama (11-12). The Tigers broke the game open with a nine-run second inning as they sent 13 batters to the plate, allowing five hits, three walks, a hit batter and a pair of errors.
Katie Schuler broke up the shutout with a three-run home run in the top of the fifth. Smith had a career-high three hits, while Stagner also posted a multi-hit game with two singles.
How It Happened
• South Alabama had a scoring opportunity in the opening frame. Stagner lined a one-out single to right in the opening frame, and Branstetter was then hit by a pitch – the 13th time in her Jaguar career. Both runners moved up on a fly out to center, but Jayden Heavener (5-1) recorded a strikeout to end the threat.
• Coffey led off the next half inning with a single back up the middle and with one out, Maci Bergeron and Edwards drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. The first run of the inning came home on a wild pitch as Coffey raced home (LSU, 1-0). The Tigers then added two more runs on Redoutey's double to right (LSU, 3-0).
• Smith laced a one-out single back up the middle South's next time up and
Morgan Hall – making her first career start – walked, but Heavener stranded the two Jaguar runners with a strikeout to end the inning.
• LSU erupted Hodge was hit by a pitch to begin the bottom of the second, and Coffey recorded her second hit in as many at-bats. Jalia Lassiter then plated the first run of the inning with a double to center (LSU, 4-0). Bergeron then plated two more runs with a single, and one batter later Edwards lifted a 1-0 pitch deep over the wall in left to extend the Tiger advantage to 8-0. The sixth run in the inning came three batters later on a sacrifice fly (LSU, 9-0). The Tigers took advantage of the Jags' second error of the inning, scoring two more (LSU, 11-0).
• Stagner led off the Jaguar third with her second hit of the game – her sixth multi-hit game of the spring – and two batters later moved into scoring position when Davidson was hit by a pitch. Both runners though would be stranded after another strikeout by Heavener.
• The Tigers added seven more runs on four hits and four more walks in their half of the third to extend the lead out to 18-0.
• Branstetter drew a one-out walk – her 14th of the season – and Davidson then lined a single to left in the top of the fifth.
