South Drops Heart breaker to Minnesota in Extra Innings

BATON ROUGE, La. | Minnesota's Tinley Easton singled through the left side of the infield to score the winning run as the Golden Gophers picked up a 1-0 win over South Alabama in extra innings on day two of the LSU Round Robin at Tiger Park.

Sydney Scapin (0-3) took the tough-luck loss as she tossed all 8.2 innings in the circle for South Alabama (11-13), striking out a career-high six batters and allowing just three hits. Scapin was solid as Minnesota stranded 14 runners.

Minnesota's (10-10) Sydney Schwartz went the distance, tossing all nine innings for the Gophers as she scattered four hits and struck out four batters.

Quotable – head coach Becky Clark
- On Scapin's performance in the circle and the game: "Syd (Scapin) pitched with a lot of heart and competed today, and I thought we had a few high-level defensive plays. Syd is getting better every time she goes out in the circle, and I look for her to continue to get better.

"We had our opportunities on offense, but weren't able to push one across. We have yet to put it all together as a team and have to keep working toward that end."

How It Happened
•    Nani Valencia drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the first for the Gophers. Two batters later, Maggie Werner also walked after working the count full with two outs, but Scapin rallied back to strike out Tinley Easton – her second of the inning – to leave the runners stranded.
•    Jessa Snippes walked with one away in the second, and like the first inning, Minnesota's Breezy Burnett drew a two-out walk to put a pair on. Scapin again stranded the two runners with a foul out to third.
•    Caitlyn Gavin drew a one-out walk to begin the first – the first base runner by South. Gavin was sacrificed over to second by Brooklynn Bockhaus, but Schwartz recorded a strikeout to end the inning.
•    In the bottom of the third, Valencia drew her second walk of the contest to begin the inning and then moved into scoring position on a ground out back to Scapin in the circle. The freshman righty though retired the final two batters – a strike out looking and a pop out on the infield – to strand another Minnesota base runner.
•    Snippes was hit by a pitch with one out in the Gopher fourth, and Jae Cosgriff recorded the first base hit by either team one batter later, but again, Scapin was able to prevent any damage with a foul out first and a strike out of pinch hitter Brooklyn Jones – her fifth strikeout of the game.
•    Katie Schuler posted South's first hit of the game when she lined a ball off the shortstop's glove to start the fifth inning. Two batters later, Ansleigh Smith lined a single to left, moving pinch runner Gracie Jo Ward to second with one out. Bockhaus drew a two-out walk to load the bases, but Schwartz induced a ground-ball fielder's choice to end the threat and keep the game scoreless.
•    In the bottom half of the inning, Valnecia walked to lead off the frame and Taylor Krapt was hit by a pitch. Minnesota placed runners at second and third with two away after a sacrifice bunt, but Scapin was able to escape with a fly out to right center.
•    Cosgriff was hit by a pitch with one out in the bottom of the sixth, and Burnett followed with a single to left. The two runners were sacrificed into scoring position, but Scapin again stranded the two Minnesota runners with a fly out to center.
•    With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Warner moved into scoring position on a wild pitch, but Scapin was again able to buckle down and prevent any damage with a fly out to left.
•    South Alabama had runners at the corners with two outs in the top of the eighth, but Schwartz worked out of the jam with a pop out to shallow left field.
•    Margaret Tobias drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the ninth, and with two outs, Warner walked to put two on for Minnesota. Both runners then moved up a base after a wild pitch, and Easton singled through the left side of the infield for the walk-off win (MINN: 1-0).
