Jaguars Down No. 13 Golden Eagles, 6-3 to Tie Series

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - South Alabama (12-14, 2-6 SBC) staves off No. 13 Southern Miss (19-8, 6-2 SBC) in their first comeback of the season.

The Jaguar offense set the tone on the first pitch of the game, with Brennan Holt charging the opening ball into right-center. Later in the inning Kyle Morrison found home after Lucas Ismaili slashed a double to put the Jags on the board first.

USM responded in the bottom of the first with a two-run shot to take the lead, but after two runners reached to start the second for the Golden Eagles, Jaguar starter Mitchell Heer retired six batters in a row. In the middle of that the Jags tied it up with a Morrison sac fly.

Southern Miss reset a one run lead in the fourth with a solo shot, but Heer, undeterred, sat down nine USM batters in a row that stretched into the seventh inning. Morrison stepped up in the seventh and flipped the advantage in favor of South Alabama on a two-run home run off the giant Coke bottle in left field.

The Jaguars added insurance runs, with a Ty Brooks RBI double in the eighth and a Mike Young sacrifice bunt in the ninth to give Jaxon Shineflew a three-run cushion leading into the final three outs.

Win: Mitchell Heer (3-0)
Save: Jaxon Shineflew (2)
Loss: Colby Allen (3-2)

QUOTES
Head Coach Mark Calvi

On the offensive approach tonight: We told the guys offensively against their lefty that the best pitch to hit with (Kros) Sivley is going to be the first pitch. He'll give you the fastball early, and then he tries to mix off of that. So we talked about getting on him early. It leaves you susceptible to early outs and the kid being at 35 pitches through three innings, but that's what we needed to do to get on to him. They used some of their best guys. No doubt, they used their go-to guys. And, you know, obviously Colby Allen is one of the better relievers in the country, so we did a great job getting their starter out, and they went to a bunch of their leverage guys. The only way you can do that, by making another team go to their pen, is by your guy holding serve, your guy doing his job.

On Kyle Morrison and his approach at the plate: Man, he's one of the better hitters I've had in 32 years that I've coached, He's a complete hitter; he's got power, he's not just a pull guy, he's not just an oppo guy. He takes what the pitcher gives him and he puts a good swing on it. He's dangerous, and he's just a mature, confident, hitter and he was huge today for us.
