Jags Fall in 12th Inning to No. 13 Southern Miss, 8-7

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - South Alabama (12-15, 2-7 SBC) failed to score in extra innings in the loss to No. 13 Southern Miss (20-8, 7-2 SBC), 8-7 in 12 innings.

John Smith III skied his third home run of the season off the Southern Miss scoreboard in the opening inning to give the Jags a 1-0 lead. USM scored one in the second and one in the third for a one-run lead, but the Jags tied it up in the fifth with an RBI single from Brennan Holt

Southern Miss scored two on a home run in the sixth, and USA responded with a sacrifice bunt to cut it back to a one-run game. The Golden Eagles stretched their lead out to four runs on a three-run shot.

The Jaguars took the eighth inning by storm, Smith singled to lead off the inning and moved to second after Kyle Morrison walked. Lucas Ismaili scored Smith. Duncan Mathews loaded the bases on a single and Rett Johnson moved everyone ahead 90 feet on another single. Robert Miranda plated the last scorer of the inning with a sacrifice fly, making it a 6-7 entering the ninth game after holding USM scoreless.

The ninth inning saw the top of the order, with Holt reaching by walk, and Morrison doubling to center field to round Holt all the way home and tie the ball game. Reliever John Gillis held USM scoreless in the ninth and 10th inning.

In extras, the Jags failed to reach base other than an Ethan Melton HBP in the 10th, and a Morrison walk in the 11th. The Golden Eagles's first three batters reached base in the 12th inning, and a sac fly to right field was the tie-breaker.

Win: Ty Long (1-0)
Loss: Brian Garmon (1-4)
