MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Hits for the Jags (11-13) were few and far between as Auburn (20-5) jumped to an early lead and coasted to a 13-5 final score.
Kyle Morrison opened up the scoring with a monster two-run homer that was clocked at 108 mph off the bat and traveled 434 feet out of right field.
Auburn responded in the bottom of the first with a three-run homer of their own to retake the lead. The Tigers never gave it back, scoring five runs in the second inning. An RBI double scored a ninth run in the third.
A leadoff walk in the sixth by
Mike Young, followed by walks from
Josh Stevenson and
Greg Pettay loaded the bases for the Jags, and
Ty Brooks sent all three home, with Pettay making it home on a throwing error.
Auburn stretched the lead back out to six at the bottom of the inning, then added a run a piece in the seventh and eighth innings.
Win: Jett Johnston (4-0)
Loss: Tyler Smith (2-1)
QUOTES
Head Coach Mark Calvi
On the team's play today: Offensively, K-Mo (
Kyle Morrison) came out with the big two-run home run; gave us some momentum. Got a bad start (pitching), couldn't get the ball off their bats, couldn't make enough pitches, and next thing you know, we're behind, playing from behind all night long. Not a good feeling against a very good club like that. Story of the game, you know, we didn't pitch well enough to win with, nine free passes, walks and hit by pitches, and we just didn't play a good enough game tonight. Period, we got outplayed, and that's what happened.
