MOBILE, Ala. - South Alabama travels up to the state capitol for a Tuesday clash against the No. 11 Auburn Tigers (19-5, 4-2) in Riverwalk Stadium.
The Jaguars enter the contest 11-12, and 1-5 in conference play after a weekend series against the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns, where Louisiana won Friday and Sunday for the series win.Â
SERIES HISTORY
South Alabama and Auburn are one of the most storied rivalries in South Alabama history, with the Jaguars holding the all-time series lead, 50-30. First meeting in 1968, The Jags took the first three games of the series, all in Mobile. In recent history, Auburn is 7-3 over the last 10 games, with the Tigers winning the last six games in a row, dating back to a home-and-home series in 2018.Â
The Jaguar-Tiger rivalry has been played on a neutral site four separate times, with the last three matchups in Montgomery's Riverwalk Stadium. The first neutral site meeting came in the 2005 NCAA Tallahassee Regional, where the Tigers won 13-8 in the opening round of the regional.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Auburn enters the midweek matchup 3-1 against Sun Belt schools, with a win over Troy, and a series win over Old Dominion. The Tigers travel to Montgomery after going 3-1 the previous week, with a win over Alabama State, and a series victory over #24 Kentucky. In midweeks this season, Auburn is 5-1, with their lone loss at UAB.
HE GETS ON BASE
Sophomore Catcher
Duncan Mathews, after the first 20 games of the season, was one of the most valuable players in college baseball. Mathews ranked fourth in the country in on-base percentage, reaching a bag at a .603 clip. In 14 starts, Mathews led the team in BA and stood third in the conference with a .439 average. A defensive mainstay behind the plate, Mathews caught three runners and worked as a plus-defensive player with his slick glove movement to stretch the strike zone for his pitchers.
