AUBURN, Ala. | South Alabama jumped out to a five-run lead, but 23rd-ranked Auburn rallied back to defeat the Jags, 7-6 Wednesday night at Jane B. Moore Field on AnnaLea Adams' walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the seventh.
Presley Lively drove in three runs for South Alabama (14-16), while
Caitlyn Gavin scored twice and walked twice.Â
Adams was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a walk and two runs scored for Auburn (21-8), while Anna Wohlers homered twice and drove in six.
The win marked the 14th come-from-behind victory this season for Auburn, which leads the nation, and snaps the Tigers seven-game losing streak.
The two home runs by Wohlers marked the fourth time an opposing player has hit multiple home runs in a game this season against the Jags and the grand slam was the first allowed by the Jaguars since Kate Covington (Virginia, 2/13/21).
Quotable – head coach Becky Clark
- On the game: "Tonight was a tough one. We had it won, but just couldn't finish it. I thought our effort and compete was there, but our execution lacked in some areas. We will bounce back and get ready to compete against a good Georgia State team this weekend."
How It HappenedÂ
•   Auburn threatened in its half of the first as Nelia Peralta lined a one-out single to left and Adams bounced a single through the left side of the infield to put a pair on. The two runners then moved into scoring position after a wild pitch, and KK McCrary drew a five-pitch walk to load the bases for the Tigers.
Ryley Harrison was able to work out of the jam though as she struck out Wohlers and then got Amelia Leach to ground out to third to end the threat.
•   The Jaguars took advantage of the missed opportunity and scored five runs after batting around.
Megan Davidson and
Stephanie Gonzalez lined back-to-back, one-out singles in South's half of the second.
Ansleigh Smith then loaded the bases as she reached when Auburn starting pitcher Haley Rainey was unable to cleanly field a grounder back to the circle. South took the lead one batter as Gavin drew a bases-loaded walk after working the count full to bring home pinch runner
Gracie Jo Ward (USA, 1-0). The Jags added another run on
Morgan Hall's RBI fielder's choice when the Tigers tried to get Gonzalez at the plate. Auburn challenged that there was interference, but the call on the field was upheld. (USA, 2-0). After a pitching change, Lively then cleared the bases as she tripled to right – her Sun Belt-leading fourth of the season – to extend South's lead to 5-0.Â
•   Adams reached on an infield single – her second hit of the contest – with one out in the bottom of the third. Two batters later, Wohlers homered to center on the first pitch she saw from Harrison (USA, 5-2).
•   The Jaguars got a run back the next half inning to extend the lead back out to four. Gavin drew her second walk of the game to begin the top of the fourth for South, and with two outs, Branstetter lined a 2-2 pitch back up the middle to score Gavin from second (USA, 6-2).
•    Icess Tresvik drew a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the fifth, and one batter later, Peralta doubled to right to put a pair of Tigers in scoring position. Adams then reached for her third-straight plate appearance as she walked to load the bases, and with one out Wohlers cleared the bases with a grand slam as she drove a 3-2 pitch over the wall in center – her second home run of the game (6-6).
•   With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Adams lifted a 1-0 pitch over the wall in center to seal the win for the Tigers.
