South Downs ULM at Home for First Conference Win

MOBILE, Ala.- The South Alabama women's basketball team downed ULM at the Mitchell Center Saturday afternoon in a 73-68 victory that snapped their 12-game losing streak and improved their record to 5-18 on the season.

The first quarter was all South as the Jaguars got off to a fast start. A layup from Rachel Leggett and a three-pointer from Amyria Walker pushed South Alabama ahead 16-5 in the early going. South maintained control for the remainder of the quarter as they entered into the second quarter up 21-12.

The Warhawks managed to scrap back and put a dent in the Jaguar lead. South kept their composure as Rachel Leggett and Terren Coffil provided some much-needed points. Both sides continued to fight as South Alabama had the advantage at the half in front 34-32.

Both teams competed hard at the start of the third, with the Warhawks grabbing a 38-36 lead. South Alabama responded in resounding fashion as Terren Coffil converted on back-to-back layups that would be followed up by an Amyria Walker three to give South ten unanswered points. South maintained control as they headed into the fourth up 51-46.

The Jaguars offense came out swinging on all cylinders as they increased their lead to double digits. South fought off a late push from the Warhawks to claim the 73-68 victory at home.

QUOTES

Junior guard Rachel Leggett on how good it is to get a win, "It feels so good. We have been waiting for so long. At practice, our energy doesn't change, Coach Yo keeps on us and is still on our side. She isn't letting up or treating us any differently. We still go in there with the mentality that we are going to win every single time.

Head coach Yolisha Jackson on the win, "I am just super proud of this group tonight. We have said to ourselves, "Hey, we're not losers, we have just lost some". We are trending up so we have to continue to fight and do the right things like coming in with the right attitude and preparation scheme. The kids executed every part of the game plan tonight. I am so proud of the win but I am more proud of how we have approached our work through the hard times. We have approached it the same every time so I am super proud. Every kid that touched the floor and everyone that was on the bench did their job and their role and I cannot be any happier for this group".
