Jags' Late Rally Not Enough in 9-7 Loss to UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Despite out-hitting UAB and a late six run burst in the final three innings, South Alabama was unable to complete the comeback, losing 7-9 in the final game of the series.

The Jags scored first, with Kyle Morrison slapping a single to send Brennan Holt home. South then struggled throughout the middle innings, unable to string multiple successful at bats together to score again.

A two-out rally for the Blazers led to five runs scored for UAB in the second inning, leaving the Jags to work from behind again for the third time this weekend. Defensively, two errors led to another two runs that were tacked on to the UAB lead in the third inning.

Three innings of relative silence by both sides were ended with a John Smith RBI single. The eighth inning saw action with a Lucas Ismaili single. Mike Young put himself and Ismaili in scoring position with a double into the right field alley. Ty Brooks followed suit with a double of his own that scored both Young and Ismaili. Rett Johnson followed the trend with an RBI single of his own to cut the Blazer lead down to two.

UAB fired back in the bottom of the eighth with two runs of their own to stretch out their cushion back to four runs. Moving into their last chance, the Jags earned a leadoff walk, then walked another batter after a foul out. Josh Stevenson doubled one run in, and Mike Young sacrificed his at bat to send Ismaili home from third. South had battled back to only a two-run deficit with the tying runner at the plate, but with only one out to spare they were unable to work the comeback.

Freshman lefty Chase Davis made his collegiate debut, starting the game on the mound for the Jags, recording four strikeouts in his 1.2 innings, allowing three runs on four hits.

Win: Chase Ingram (1-0)
Save: Braxton Shelton (1)
Loss: Chase Davis (0-1)

QUOTES
Head Coach Mark Calvi

On going down early today but rallying late: You know, we go up one nothing. They answer back. I thought Chase Davis was really good. UAB is a good team. We talked about this the other day; they're a good team that's playing really, really well right now. That's what they're doing. They're playing really well. They played 27 really good innings, and we played about 13 and a half 14, and it got us.We didn't play well enough in the second; we didn't play well enough in the eighth defensively, and it got us today. So they made us pay. They maximized their offensive opportunities. We had several chances, you know, to get a two out hit in the middle of the game, early in the game, and didn't do it. We had a chance to score a couple, maybe get three or four (runs) through three innings, and we were standing there with one run. So I give our guys credit, we were down after losing the first two, you could have folded up your tent and headed home, but our guys kept battling, kept grinding. I like what we did today, offensively. Mike Young did a good job. You know, we need a couple guys. We need a couple guys to heat up, offensively we need more.
