Jags Fall to Louisiana, 31-22

MOBILE, Ala. – After falling behind 31-7, South Alabama Football fought to put itself in position to make a comeback, but could not execute in key moments late as Louisiana held on to win, 31-22, Saturday night at Hancock Whitney Stadium.

The loss dropped the Jaguars to 2-7 on the season with a 1-4 record in Sun Belt Conference play.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Facing a 10-0 deficit in the second quarter, the Jags went on a methodical 16-play, 84-yard drive to pull within three. Keenan Phillips scored on a 15-yard touchdown run to get South on the scoreboard.
  • After South pulled within three points, Louisiana scored 14-straight points to close the half and take a 24-7 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Ragin' Cajuns then got the ball to start the second half and scored to make it 31-7.
  • The Jags responded by scoring a touchdown on their first offensive drive of the second half. Bishop Davenport picked up the rushing touchdown from five yards out to make the score 31-14.
  • After a missed field goal by the Cajuns, Davenport hit Jeremy Scott for a 64-yard touchdown pass. The Jags then went for two and Davenport connected with Trent Thomas to make the score 31-22.
  • Late in the fourth quarter, South Alabama drove down to the Louisiana one-yard line with a chance to close the gap even further. The Jags were unable to punch in the touchdown, though, and Louisiana held on to win the game 31-22.
 KEY STATS
  • Louisiana was 14-of-17 on pass attempts for 232 yards and two touchdowns.
  • The Ragin' Cajuns were a perfect 4-for-4 on red zone attempts while South only scored on two of its three trips inside the red zone.
  • Louisiana generated the only takeaway of the game, intercepting a Jaguar pass attempts on USA's final offensive drive of the night.
 NOTABLE
  • Phillips' 15-yard touchdown run in the second quarter was the first of his career.
  • It was the second-straight week with a long touchdown reception for Scott. After scoring on a 74-yard touchdown at Georgia State, he struck again with a 64-yarder against Louisiana.
  • With six catches for 102 yards, Scott recorded his second-straight, 100-yard game
 QUOTABLE

"Disappointed to say the least. Just didn't play well enough all around. Had our opportunities early in the ball game, but didn't convert on some third downs when we were moving the ball. Had some opportunities late in the ball game, but didn't convert a couple third downs and a critical red zone opportunity. That's how you come up short and lose a ball game."
