South Splits Saturday Series

MOBILE, Ala. - The Jaguars shut down the Seahawk offense, 4-3 in game two of the doubleheader after South struggled to find their offense in the first game.

In the first game of the day, a pitchers' duel between UNCW's RJ Sales and South's Carson Swilling. Both pitchers handled business, allowing only one run each through five, but Swilling's day was done after giving up a second run. Swilling allowed four hits, while logging eight strikeouts and only allowing six of the 21 batters faced to reach base. A solo shot in the sixth was enough to put the game out of reach before another insurance run in the eighth that gave UNC-Wilmington the 4-1 win, with the Jags lone run coming in the first inning after putting Sales in a jam.

Game two of the day again started with early scoring by South. Junior catcher Nathan Wood made his first start behind the plate today and managed to hit 2-2 with the Jags' first RBI in the second inning, and ran in the third during the fifth inning. Cam Hill's start on the mound set the Jaguars up for success in this game, throwing five innings and four strikeouts and allowing only four hits and one run. Logan Wash, Gant Starling, and Cooper Cooksey took over on the mound, with Cooksey having a standout 2.0 IP only allowing one of his seven batters faced to touch a bag. Grant Wood then entered in the final inning to log his third save of the season, reaching speeds up to 95 on his fastball and blowing by two of his three outs as strikeouts.

QUOTES
They are what we thought they were going to be, and that's a very solid team with very good pitching. We got a match up on the mound, because you saw both teams had infields in in the third today in both games. Both teams respect the other teams pitching and program so you saw it there, we left a bunch of runners on base. They have guys good enough that can get them out of jams. You know, they're not throwing many to the backstop and they can come in and throw three, four, or five breaking balls in a row. They can match up and so they were a very good team. We knew exactly what they were and they are as advertised, especially on the mound. Time to go win a series. The first game, we lost our big chance in the first inning. We had a chance to blow it open and we didn't, credit to their pitcher, but we didn't do it. We had our opportunities. We left men on base. In my opinion, that kid (RJ Sales), you're going to look up in three or four years and he's going to be pitching in a big league spring training game. No doubt about it. He's one of the better ones. I hope we don't see anyone better than him this year. But you gotta be guys like that, you know? And we were in position to do it and we didn't do it. But that's game one, that's behind us. Our guys played hard. I thought Swilling was good. The two wild pitches to the backstop were unfortunate with runners at third. That was unfortunate, but I thought he competed and I thought he did a really nice job. Cam Hill was very very good today and to me, the game was on the line the whole game, but Cooper Cooksey, the job that he did in those two innings. When they were starting to come back they had chipped away, chipped away, chipped away, got into over a one run deficit and Cooksey came in the seventh, and he was outstanding after going through and the leadoff guy. I think he did it two hitters in a row, two innings in a row. Offense comes and goes; neither team were juggernauts. Offensively, we hit some balls hard today. It wasn't like we struck out with men on. We lined out a couple times with two outs and second and third bases loaded. So we were a hit or two away from, you know, putting seven, eight runs on the board today. But again, credit to their pitching. We had to grind through the whole day. You said a long day, it was a really long day, but it was good baseball. Two really good teams going at it and it's all about winning the series tomorrow.
