DELAND, Fla.- After overcoming a 19-point deficit, South Alabama's late comeback bid came up just short in the final day of the Stetson Hatter Classic versus Bethune-Cookman.
South had a slower-than-expected start, falling behind 11-4 in the opening minutes.
Terren Coffil helped keep South in it early as she connected on a three to make it 11-7 as the 4:30 mark. The Wildcats responded with a 9-1 run to close the quarter as South Alabama struggled to convert from the field, trailing 20-8 after the opening quarter.
South's struggles continued in the second quarter as the Wildcats stayed hot. The Wildcats would go on a commanding 10-3 run to increase their lead to as much as 20.
Terren Coffil managed to cut the lead to 19 as South entered the lockeroom by hitting a pair from the charity stripe.
South began to show life in the middle of the third as they went on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 11. South continued to push the envelope on the Wildcats as
Rachel Leggett would lay it in to make it a single-digit affair at the end of the third.
Terren Coffil went on a tear at the start of the fourth, scoring South's first nine points and cutting the lead to two early. Despite their best efforts, the visitors went on a quick 8-2 run to take a 55-47 lead late. The Jags would make one last push but unfortunately would fall just short in a 62-67 final.
STATS
South shot 33.3% from the field while shooting a solid 17-23 (73.9%) from the line.
Amyria Walker led South with 17 points as
Rachel Leggett recorded her second double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Terren Coffil finished with 16 points on 100% shooting from the charity stripe. Coffil scored 11 of her 16 in the fourth.

South will begin conference play as they travel to face Old Dominion on December 29.
