NORFOLK, Va.- South Alabama fell in their conference opener on the road to Old Dominion in an 82-59 final.
Daniela Gonzalez helped give South the lead early with back-to-back jumpers to begin the quarter. The Jags and Monarchs continued to trade baskets as the quarter moved forward. Unfortunately for South, the hosts would get hot, going on a 7-0 run to take a 19-8 lead.
Daniela Gonzalez and
Rachel Leggett would convert on layups to cut the deficit as South trailed 23-12 after one.
South came out swinging in the second quarter, nailing four straight threes to bring them to within four. The Monarchs responded with a quick 8-0 run to increase their lead to 14. South managed to fight back and put a dent in the lead as they entered halftime trailing 44-34.
The Jags struggled from the field in the third as the Monarchs scored 12 unanswered points to begin the quarter. South continued to play hard but would find themselves behind 24 at the end of the quarter.
South got off to a better start in the fourth as
Daniela Gonzalez connected for another three while
Amyria Walker converted on a layup to cut the deficit to 19. Unfortunately for the Jags, the Monarchs would put the game out of reach late as South fell in a 82-59 final.
STATS
South shot 32.8% from the field as a team on the day with
Daniela Gonzalez leading the way with a career high 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Amyria Walker added in 14 points and four rebounds as
Terren Coffil chipped in 12 points.
UP NEXT
South will look to bounce back as they return to the Mitch where they will take on Appalachian State in their conference home opener on January 2.
