MOBILE, Ala.- The South Alabama soccer team put together a well earned 3-1 victory over ULM that earned them the top spot in the Sun Belt West Division while also earning the second seed in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
The first half was a nail biter with both sides getting great looks but struggling to convert. Both sides played a strong brand of defense, allowing no goals in the first half. Both sides continued to battle as they entered the half scoreless.
The second half got things rolling as ULM scored in the opening seconds to jump ahead 1-0.
Irene Campo responded with a goal a minute later to even the score at one. Both teams continued to fight and push the tempo as the score remained tied at one. In the 85th minute,
Irene Campo would put together a resounding putback goal to give the Jags the 2-1 lead.
Monique Gray would soon follow up as she netted a goal in the 87th minute from a beautifully placed ball by Campo to give the Jags the 3-1 win. With the win today, the Jags clinched the West Division and earned the second seed in the conference tournament.
QUOTES
Irene Campo on scoring two goals, "I was just trying to help the team with any chance that I got, it was really good today"
Monique Gray on the impact of today's win, "It was a big game. We came back from Texas with long travel, I am just so proud of this team".
Chris Hennessey on the win, "They dug deep, they fought hard. I'm really proud of the group that we've got. A lot of sickness going around right now with the team, obviously some injuries so it is a phenomenal achievement given where we were at the start of the year to come out and do what they have done over a weekend and win the West division. I am so proud of those guys and this staff.
