DALLAS –
La'Damian Webb has been named to the 2023 Doak Walker Watch List presented by the PwC SMU Athletic Forum, which annually recognizes the top college running back in the nation.
The 5-foot-7, 210 Jag is one of 75 running backs selected to the list, which is the second of the preseason watch list for Webb as he was also named a candidate for the Maxwell Award earlier this summer.
Webb, who was named first-team preseason all-conference by the league coaches last week, also received first-team honors from both Athlon Sports and Phil Steele publications and third-team honors from PFF earlier this summer. The senior finished his first season as a Jag with 1,067 yards on 210 carries, becoming the second player in school history to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season despite missing two games.
He was named honorable mention CFN All-America, while also garnering first-team all-SBC honors following the 2022 season. Webb ranked in the top 50 in seven different categories nationally, including 13th in rushing touchdowns and 10th in total touchdowns. The Opelika, Ala., native also recorded 17 receptions for 184 yards out of the backfield with a touchdown.
The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name ten semifinalists in November, and three finalists, as voted on by the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee, will be announced in November. The committee will cast a second vote in December to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of past recipients, former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives.
The recipient of the 2023 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards in December.
The award is named for SMU's three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.
