South Alabama returns to action this weekend, opening conference play on Friday night in Statesboro (Ga.) against Georgia Southern.
Quotable, head coach Mark Calvi
Used a ton of arms tonight, talk about the staff and the play tonight …
"I thought our guys pitched extremely well, we struck out 13 and walked three. We gave up a few hits and those innings we gave up some leadoff walks and three guys scored. That happens in college baseball, that leadoff guy gets on with a walk 75 percent of the time they will score. I thought pitching and defense we stood toe to toe with those guys. Offensively, we just need a couple more guys to step up. Alabama is an outstanding team, we knew that. Holman was everything we saw and prepared for. I tip my hat to them."
Conference season is here …
"I told the guys yesterday in a team meeting that we are close in all three areas, we are close. The good news is that it is not a big gap from where we are to where we need to be, but sometimes that last 10 percent is the hardest. Close isn't good enough, not in this league. We have guys that are capable, that are not quite there. There are some guys that it will be easier for us to go up in numbers than to come down. We have played a very challenging schedule, a break here and a bloop there, a pitch here and a pitch there has made the difference in us being 9-8, 10-7. Our guys practice hard, they play hard, it didn't happen for us we just need a little more execution consistently in all three areas. We are capable, we just have to keep plugging. The game will take from you, and it will give back to you if you keep the right perspective and the right frame of mind. That is my reminder, mindset and keep being bulldogs on the field. Act the same whether your things are going good or bad, no one should know, if you are a good player, eventually the game will allow you to be a good player."
