JACKSONVILLE, Ala. | Jacksonville State evened the series with South Alabama after coming away with a 4-0 victory over the Jags at Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Jacksonville State (5-10) used a four-run seventh inning to pull away for the win.
Gehrig Conard started and went six innings scattering six hits and striking out nine, with no walks allowed on the day. He gave way to
Zach Willingham (2-1) in the seventh who gave up the game's first run on a pair of walks and a double, before a run scored on a
Sam Knowlton wild pitch.
South Alabama was held to five hits, by five different hitters, by a pair of Jacksonville State pitchers.
How It HappenedÂ
- (B7) Following a pair of one-out walks, Bear Madliak punched a double to shallow right field to drive in Caleb Johnson with the first run of the game. The Gamecocks added another run on a wild pitch, before another would score on hit by pitch. The inning continued with another bases loaded walk leading to a pitching change with two outs in the inning, Jacksonville State 4-0.
Quotable, head coach Mark Calvi
Another quality start, second in a row …
"Conard was great, we got to pick up and get him a win. When you pitch you like that, you match up and pitch like that. Our guy was great, their guy was great. The four walks in the seventh are what got us and they took advantage of a hit here or there. Offensively we didn't threaten in the first game. We will chalk it up and move on."
Pitching matching up …
"They just outlasted us today, we outlasted them yesterday. The walks were disappointing in the seventh. We had some guys out there who have done really well this year – Willingham and Knowlton. We will chalk it up to a bad inning and move on."
