South falls to Tulsa on day one of South Alabama Invitational

Seventh-inning rally comes up short

MOBILE, Ala. | The South Alabama softball team had it's five-game win streak snapped Thursday evening as the Jags fell 4-2 to Tulsa at Jaguar Field on day one of the South Alabama Invitational presented by Marriott Mobile.

South Alabama (6-5) tried to mount a seventh-inning rally, scoring a run, but with two out and a runner on, the Jags were called for obstruction on the base paths on what would have been a single to right by Odalys Cordova, ending the game.

Mackenzie Brasher, Meredith Keel and Gabby Stagner each had two hits apiece for the Jags, while Keel also reached on a walk. Brasher and Keel both drove in the lone runs for South Alabama.

Tulsa (6-5) placed runners at the corners with one out in the top of the first, and Jenna Hardy (2-3) looked as if she were going to get out of the inning as Ciara Skaggs hit a ground ball to short, but the throw to first was high allowing Haley Morgan to score. Abby Jones then dropped in an RBI single in shallow center to plate the second run of the inning, both of which were unearned due to a pair of Jaguar errors in the opening fame.

South had a chance to answer back in the bottom half of the inning as Brasher and Keel recorded back-to-back singles, but Tulsa's Kylee Nash (3-2) was able to work out of the jam with a 5-3 double play and a ground out to first.

The Golden Hurricane had a pair move into scoring position after a pair of two-out hits and a stolen base in the second, but Hardy was able to hold them off the scoreboard with a strikeout to end the frame.

For the second time in as many innings, the Jaguars had the first two batters of the inning reach after singles by Stagner and Sasha Willems, and with two outs, Marley Sims was hit by a 1-2 pitch to load the bases. Brasher then sneaked one through the left side of the infield to plate a run and cut the deficit in half (1-2). That was all the damage the Jags could do though as a pop out to second.

Tulsa got the run back in the third on a sacrifice fly to left by Jones, scoring Tara Hall, who was pinch running for Kailyn Bearpaw, who had doubled to right center earlier in the inning, to push the Golden Hurricane lead back out to two.

Stagner lined a one-out double to the gap in left center – her team-leading fifth double of the season – in the Jaguar sixth. The Stagner double was the first hit by the Jags since the third inning. South Alabama would bring the tying run to the plate later in the inning and with Stagner standing at third, Nash recorded her third strikeout of the contest to end the inning.

Tulsa added some insurance in the top of the seventh. Imani Edwards tripled to center with one out and then came home on a fielder's choice one batter later to make it 4-1.

Pinch hitter Shelby Garrett led off the bottom half of the seventh with a single back up the middle. Bailey Welch reentered the game and moved around to third after a failed pick off attempt. Keel beat the throw to first for and infield single to bring in a run and trim the deficit to 4-2.
