Jaguars fall to Mobile in season opener

MOBILE, Ala.-- The South Alabama men's basketball team fell to the Mobile Rams 83-74 in its season opener Monday night at the Mitchell Center.

Judah Brown led the way for South, setting a new career high in scoring with 21 points. In his first game as a Jag, Isiah Gaiter scored 14 points with four assists and five rebounds. Samuel Tabe also added 12 points and six rebounds of his own.

Pooh Frazier guided Mobile with 23 points and was joined in double figures by four other Rams.

Game Facts (How it Happened)

  • After Gaiter opened things up with a tough finish at the rim for the Jags, Mobile would begin gaining momentum and jump out to a 12-2 run at the 16:00 mark.
  • Mobile kept things rolling and jolted out to a 37-16 lead at the halfway point in the first half before taking a 47-23 lead into the break, shooting 68.7 percent from the field.
  • South Alabama did not roll over coming out of the half and started to heat up.
  • Following a stretch of jumpers back and forth between both teams the Jags started to pressure the Rams in the front court.
  • This led to Brown connecting on two straight three-pointers and Tabe scoring seven second-half points to lead the Jaguars on an 18-4 run and bring the score to 69-58 with 6:53 remaining.
  • Thomas Howell asserted himself into the game, hammering home a dunk and two free throws to bring the score back to single digits, 71-62, with 4:00 to play.
  • The Jags fought until the end, but the deficit was too much to overcome as the Rams walked away with the victory.

Notes

  • This loss snapped South Alabama's streak of 31 straight home opener victories, dating back to 1992.
  • Tonight is the Jaguar's first loss to Mobile in school history as they held a nine-game win streak against the Rams.
  •  Brown hit four of USA's seven three-pointers in the game.
  • South struggled to find a rhythm offensively throughout the night. The Jags shot 35.5 from the field compared to the Rams 60 percent. South Alabama also shot 25 percent from behind the arc, while Mobile hit 41.7 percent from three-point land.
  • Howell topped all Jaguars with seven rebounds on the night.
  • Tabe and Brown both had two blocks in the second half.
