NOTES & QUOTES

Caullin Lacy became the first wide receiver in the country to record 1,000 receiving yards for the 2023 college football season. After South Alabama's game at Troy on Thursday, Lacy was the leading receiver in all of college football. After Saturday's slate of games, Lacy enters this week second in the nation in receiving yards with a total of 1,046.

–Lacy and running back La'Damian Webb have proved to be one of college football's strongest one-two punches as Lacy is second in the country in receiving yards while Webb is second in the country in rushing touchdowns. Against Troy, Webb scored his 14th rushing touchdown of the season. At the time, that put him in the lead for most in the country. He enters this week second in the nation in the category.

–South Alabama enters Saturday's game against Arkansas State having won four-straight games against the Red Wolves. It ties the Jags' longest winning streak over a Sun Belt opponent as they have also defeated Southern Miss in four-straight meetings.

"Obviously a very tough loss the other night against Troy. They did a tremendous job of making more plays than we did down the stretch. Our guys I think took advantage of the weekend and seemed to come back with some pretty good energy. I think we have a pretty resilient group of guys."

-Head Coach Kane Wommack on the team's response to a tough loss at Troy

"They've just got a lot of confidence. They're playing really hard. They play really hard on defense. The first thing that jumps off is the number of explosives from last year. They've cut that number in half in terms of giving up explosive plays."

-Offensive Coordinator Major Applewhite on a tough upcoming challenge against Arkansas State

"I think we're close in a lot of different ways, but just down the stretch we didn't have the consistency we needed. We started off fast. Guys were playing with a lot of energy, playing fast, getting ourselves off the field on third down. Doing the things we needed to do, we just didn't do a good job of sustaining it."

-Defensive Coordinator Corey Batoon on what he saw from the defense against Troy

ABOUT ARKANSAS STATE

Jaylen Raynor quarterbacks the Red Wolves and has thrown for 1,648 yards and 13 touchdowns. He has also rushed for 324 yards and five touchdowns. Courtney Jackson is the team's top receiving target with 480 yards and six touchdowns. Javante Mackey leads the Red Wolves defensively with 69 tackles.

SERIES HISTORY

Arkansas State leads the overall series with South Alabama by a tally of 6-5, though the Jags have won four-straight meetings against the Red Wolves and five of the last six.

LAST TIME OUT

Despite solid play from true freshman quarterback Gio Lopes in his first-career start, South Alabama could not generate enough offense or get enough stops to defeat Troy as the Jags fell, 28-10, Thursday night in the Battle for the Belt.

Lopez threw for 155 yards while completing 17-of-27 passes in his first-collegiate start, and also chipped in 39 yards rushing. Caullin Lacy was his primary receiving target on the night as the duo connected nine times for 89 yards. Those 89 yards gave him 1,046 on the season, making him the leading receiver in all of college football for the year and just the second Jaguar to ever record a 1,000-yard receiving season.

In addition to Lopez's 39 yards, La'Damian Webb rushed for 53 yards and a touchdown on the night. That gave Webb his 14th rushing touchdown on the season, the most in college football this year. It was also Webb's eighth-consecutive game with a rushing score this year.

Quentin Wilfawn recorded his second-straight, double-digit tackle game with 11 takedowns on the night. He also recorded two tackles for loss, one sack and one forced fumble. Jaden Voisin and Trey Kiser each contributed nine tackles apiece, and Kiser's total included two sacks.

The Jags scored the first touchdown of the night after recovering a Trojan fumble and going 44 yards for a score. Troy responded by scoring the final-two touchdowns of the house to take a 14-7 lead into halftime. South scored the first points of the second half on a Diego Guajardo field goal in the fourth quarter, but Troy responded with two more touchdowns to put the game out of reach late.
