MOBILE, Ala. – The South Alabama men's basketball team is set to unveil a fresh group of guards composed of three prolific scoring transfers, two standout freshmen, and one crafty veteran for the 2023-24 season. The Jaguars will open their season against the University of Mobile on Monday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. in the Mitchell Center.
Returning Players (1)
- Tyrell Jones (Sr., 6-2, 190): Tyrell Jones has been a significant contributor for South Alabama since transferring from Auburn in 2021. Jones started in 33 out of 34 games last year for the Jaguars and totaled 9.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per contest. He also averaged 27.7 minutes per game last season and set a new career high, scoring 25 points against Coastal Carolina.
Newcomers (5)
- Isiah Gaiter (Sr., 6-3, 195): The Meridian, Connecticut native comes to South Alabama from Division ll Assumption University in Mass. During his senior year, Gaiter paced Assumption in points (16.3), rebounds (7.6), and assists (3.7). He received First-Team all Northeast 10 Conference honors, which was the time the program had received that honor since 2004. Gaiter is also the only player in the conference to rank in the top 5 in points, rebounds, offensive rebounds, and assists.
- Marcus Millender (Fr., 5-11, 180): Millender joins the team as one of the three incoming freshman. He averaged 16.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.0 assists in his final year in high school. A polished scorer who finished his career with 1,500 total points, was named the 32nd best high school recruit in Texas by 247 Sports in 2023.
- Maxwell Land (Jr., 6-4, 195): The Saint Francis transfer arrives in Mobile after scoring double figures in 22 games last season for the Red Flash. The junior started 30 games in 2022, logging 12.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per contest. Land recorded his career-high of 26 points against Hartford and totaled five 20-point games.
- John Broom (Fr., 6-5, 190): Broom is another highly touted freshman joining the Jaguars out of Jacksonville, Alabama. The No. 2 ranked shooting guard in Alabama averaged 18.4 points and 5.8 rebounds his junior year. Broom won back-to-back state championships in his junior and senior years.
- Samuel Tabe (Gr., 6-5, 210): Tabe joins the Jaguars as a Graduate student following three impressive years at Division 2 Seton Hill in PA. In 2022, he started all 29 games for the Griffins and became a dominant force in the front court, averaging 16.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. Tabe also finished the season with 52 assists, 29 steals, nine double-doubles, and seven 20 twenty-point games.
