MOBILE, Ala. – Doubles action was on display over the weekend at the ITA Southern Regionals, with three doubles duos advancing to the round of 16, before all bowing out Sunday afternoon to end South's weekend in Baton Rouge.
The duos of Otoha Aoki/Manal Ennaciri, Tereza Dejnozkova/Elysia Pool and Nikola Novotna/Delien Kleinhans all had strong showing over the weekend, winning a total of five wins combined.
In singles, Nikola Novotna advanced to the round of 16, but fell in straight sets. The Jags totaled seven singles wins over the weekend to open fall tournament play.
Day One (Qualifying rounds):
The Jaguars opened the weekend with six singles qualifying wins, two from Manal Ennaciri, two from Nikola Novotna and two from Delien Kleinhans. The doubles pair of Otoha Aoki and Manal Ennaciri also earned a doubles qualifying win.
Day Two:
In the final round of singles qualifying, Nikola Novotna earned a win to finalize her place in the R64 singles, while Delien Kleinhans and Manal Ennaciri lost.
In the Round 64 singles, Nikola Novotna and Otoha Aoki both earned wins, while Elysia Pool and Tereza Dejnozkova both lost. Novotna won 6-2, 7-6(1) over Alexiz Lopez, Aoki defeated Alexiz Romero 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-3, while Paige Wise of Northwestern beat Elysia Pool 6-3, 6-2 and Samford's Emily Surcey beat Tereza Dejnozkova 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(2).
In doubles qualifying, Aoki and Ennaciri earned another win, winning 8-5 over a Troy Trojan duo.
Day Three:
South opened day three with singles action, with Nikola Novotna and Otoha Aoki playing in the round of 32. Novotna won her match against Tulane's Mackenzie Clark 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the round of 16, but she eventually lost to Anita Sahdiieve 0-6, 3-6, to end her singles run at the ITA Regionals.
Aoki dropped her lone singles match of the day, falling to Aran Teixido-Garcia 1-6, 1-6 in the R32.
In day three doubles action, all three duos earned wins the round of 32, advancing them to Sunday's R16. Elysia Pool and Tereza Dejnozkova started the winning with a 8-3 win over Kristina Kukaras/Maria Guirguis of Troy. Nikola Novotna and Delien Kleinhans earned a 8-6 win over Maria Rizzolo and Ava Rathe from Mississippi State and Otoha Aoki and Manal Ennaciri ended the day with a 8-6 win over Brooke Theis and Sean Mullen from Tulane.
The Jags also earned three consolation wins Saturday, with Delien Kleinhans beating Brooke Theis in three sets, 5-7, 6-1, 10-1; Tereza Dejnozkova getting a straight set win over Lucie Devier 6-0, 6-3 and Elysia coming from behind to beat Jiayun Zhu 5-7, 6-0, 10-5. Manal Ennaciri dropped her match to Cristin Tchanicheve 3-6, 3-6.
Day Four:
On Sunday, three Jaguar duos took the court in the round of 16, but all three lost, concluding South's time at the ITA Southern Regional. Otoha Aoki and Manal Ennaciri took on Kaitlyn Carnicella and Ava Esposito Cogan, but fell 3-8. Elysia Pool and Tereza Dejnozkova had a matchup with Tulane's Kristen Borlan/Lahari Yelamanchili but dropped the match 4-8. Nikola Novotna and Delien Kleinhans battled the Ole Miss duo of Kelsey Mize and Eamma Kette, but fell short 6-8.
