Over the course of this final month leading up to the start of the 2022 South Alabama football season, we will preview all the position groups on the Jaguar roster.

The nine-part series examines each position group ahead of the season opener versus Nicholls State on Sept. 3 at 4 p.m. at Hancock Whitney Stadium. This installment looks at South Alabama's quarterbacks.

RETURNING STARTERS (1)
- Desmond Trotter (Jr., 6-2, 224) – Started two of the five games he appeared in last season, and finished the year with 380 yards passing, while completing 42-of-72 passes, three touchdowns and three interceptions, and a 108.08 efficiency rating, while also rushing for 44 yards on 20 carries

OTHER RETURNING PLAYERS (2)
- Eli Gainey (So., 6-2, 214) – Did no see any action last fall, but appeared in each of the final 10 outings of the 2020 season after taking over as the holder on field goal and extra point attempts
- Tanner McGee (R-So., 6-4, 222) – Did not see any action during the 2021 season, but played in two games as a redshirt freshman in 2020

NEWCOMERS (2)
- Carter Bradley (Sr., 6-3, 216) – Played last four seasons at Toledo and was 77-of-130 passing for 972 yards and four touchdowns during the 2021 season
- JT McArdle (Fr., 6-3, 225) – Attended Opelika High School where he lettered in football and baseball for the Bulldogs

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW
- Bentley completed 212-of-303 attempts for 2,476 yards and 17 scores as his 70 percent completion percentage and 151.84 pass efficiency rating, both of which set school season records
- Trotter, who has been a member of the program since the 2018 season, has started 16 of the 23 games in which he has appeared, and ranks among the program's career top 10 in touchdown passes (second – 24), completions (third – 277), completion percentage (third – 61.7), passing efficiency rating (third – 137.67), passing yards (fourth – 3,333) and yards rushing by a quarterback (sixth – 254)
- Trotter is just three touchdown passes of matching Ross Matheny's program record (27) entering the 2022 season
- The 22 touchdowns thrown by South Alabama during the 2021 season set a new-single season record for the program
- In 2021, South Alabama's quarterbacks also set new season marks in completions (273), completion percentage (67.1), passing yards per game (256.0), while the 3,072 passing yards were the second-most in a season and just the third 3,000 yard passing season in program history
