MOBILE, Ala. – South Alabama women's soccer earned a draw in their home opener against North Alabama. The Jags got on the board early and maintained a 1-0 lead until Lions scored a late equalizer to tie the match at 1-1.
 
Freshman defender Lilly Lowery scored her first collegiate goal in the 13^th minute, when she scored a header off an assist from freshman Gabriela Angulo.
 
The teams battled back and forth for the middle 60 minutes before North Alabama senior defender Izzi Gurney scored in the 73^rd minute off an assist from Kate Wiseman to tie the match.
 
South tried to take the lead late in the match but was unable to find the back of the net, leading to their first tie of the 2022 season.

• North Alabama tied the game in the 73^rd minute off an assist from graduate student Wiseman.

• Lowery's goal was the first of her collegiate career.
• Danielle Fuentes got her first start of the 2022 season.
• Thursday's match was just the second time Jaguar soccer has played in Hancock Whitney Stadium.
• The Jags took 10 shots, while the Lions took seven.
• Jasmine Greene, Gracie Wilson, Abby Jacobs, Micaela Dusseault and Lilly Lowery played all 90 minutes.
• Gurney's goal was her second of the season.

On the match: "We're disappointed. We are at home for the opening game and we want to win these games. We looked like we were in the driver's seat in the first half. Thought we created some excellent chances that went astray. They stuck around, and all credit to North Alabama, they came out in the second half and they were the first-place team in the second half and the score line shows it. We've got a much better team than we displayed tonight."
 
On preparation for Sunday: "We don't get long in between these games, so just the reaction from the girls is what we need and it's a humbling experience for them. North Alabama is not a bad team, but for us we just didn't play well tonight. North Alabama is a fantastic team and they played well tonight. For us, we were just off."
 
UP NEXT
The Jaguars will continue the South Alabama Tournament with a game on Sunday against McNeese State. Kick off is set for 3 p.m. inside Hancock Whitney Stadium.
