South Alabama Football's Luter Named to Bednarik Award Watch List

PHILADELPHIA – South Alabama defensive back Darrell Luter, Jr continued to build his preseason resume as he was named to the Bednarik Award Watch List Monday morning as announced by the Maxwell Football Club. The award is presented annually to the outstanding defensive player in college football.

He has already been named to both the Jim Thorpe Watch List and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List, while also being selected Fourth-Team All-American by Athlon, as well as preseason first-team all-Sun Belt honoree by both the coaches and several other publications.

Luter returns after a stellar junior season in which he earned first-team all-conference honors, while also three All-America accolades. He led South Alabama with four interceptions and 10 other passes defended, finishing second in the conference in interceptions and leading the Sun Belt in passes defended per game. He ended the year third in the nation in passes defended per game and was seventh in interceptions per game, while recording the second-highest interception total in school history and the most recorded by a Jaguar since the program moved to FBS in 2012.

Semifinalists for the Chuck Bednarik Award will be announced Nov. 1, while the three finalists for the Bednarik Award will be unveiled Nov. 22. The winners of the 28th Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on Dec. 8. The formal presentations of the award will be made at the 86th Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala live from Atlantic City, N.J. on March 10, 2023.

ABOUT THE BEDNARIK AWARD
The Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1994 and is named in honor of Chuck "Concrete Charlie" Bednarik who was an All-American player at the University of Pennsylvania and later a multiple year All Pro linebacker and center for the Philadelphia Eagles. He is a member of both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame and was the last NFL player to be a full-time player on both offense and defense.
