South Alabama Falls to Louisiana Tech, 35-20

MOBILE –  Anthony Eager caught two first quarter touchdown passes and finished with 102 yards, but South Alabama (4-4, 2-2 SBC) fell 35-20 to Louisiana Tech (6-2, 4-0 SBC) Saturday afternoon in Hancock Whitney Stadium.

Key Moments
  • Louisiana Tech went for negative yardage on the opening drive, giving the South Alabama defense another game holding an opponent scoreless on its first offensive possession. The defense has held opponents scoreless on game-opening drives five straight times and for the eighth time this season. Xavious Anderson Jr. and Masey Lewis both recorded sacks on the drive.
  • Both teams combined for scores on seven of the next eight drives. South Alabama started the scoring stretch with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Jared Hollins to Anthony Eager.
  • Louisiana Tech answered on the next sequence with a four-play, 91-yard touchdown drive with 8:12 on the clock in the first quarter. Eager and Hollins then connected in an almost identical touchdown pass as the first one, giving the Jags a 14-7 lead right before the first quarter ended.
  • The Bulldogs scored the next 14 points on back-to-back touchdown passes of the 20-plus yards from Blake Baker and Tyler Kukuk – the Kukuk touchdown pass was part of a double pass from Baker to Kukuk.
  • Keenan Phillips scampered in for an 11-yard touchdown run with 6:47 left in the first half. A missed extra point attempt allowed Louisiana Tech to hold onto a 21-20 lead.
  • Louisiana Tech scored one final time in the opening half on a 35-yard pass from Baker to Marcus Calwise Jr. The touchdown pass put the Bulldogs up 28-20 at the half.
  • The South Alabama defense forced three-straight punts from Louisiana Tech to open the second half. Louisiana Tech took advantage of a Jaguar fumble in plus territory and scored on a four-yard pass that gave the Bulldogs a 35-20 advantage, which stuck for the remainder of the game.

Key Stats
  • South Alabama held Louisiana Tech to 315 yards of total offense, which ranks as the second-lowest allowed by the Jags this season. The fewest yards of total offense allowed this season was 231 against Southeastern Louisiana in the season opener.
  • Anthony Eager finished with 102 receiving yards and reached the century mark for the second time this season. He also finished with two touchdown receptions and recorded a multi-touchdown game for the second time this season.
  • Jared Hollins threw a pair of touchdown passes for the second time this season. Hollins also rushed for a career-high 38 yards on 14 attempts.
  • PJ Martin led the running attack with 82 yards on 12 attempts as South Alabama rushed for 205 yards as a team. His yardage total was his second-highest output on the season behind the 95-yard game at Arkansas State.
  • Seidrion Langston registered a career-high eight tackles to lead the South Alabama defense in that category. He also earned his second-straight start as well.
  • Xavious Anderson Jr. recorded six tackles and a sack, while Masey Lewis logged five tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack.

Notables
  • Eager is the eighth player in program history to record at least two multi-reception touchdown games in a single season. Jamaal Pritchett owns the single-season record with three such games during the 2023 season.
  • Louisiana Tech extended its series lead to 3-1. The Jags are 3-1 now at Hancock Whitney Stadium this season.
  • Today was the Jags' second game to be played on Halloween in program history. The first was a 64-6 win over Fork Union Military Academy during the 2009 inaugural season.
  • The Jags defense has held opponents scoreless on game-opening drives five straight times and for the eighth time this season. It was the fourth consecutive game that the opponent failed to get a first down on their first offensive drive.
