Six seniors are listed among the 2022 South Alabama softball roster, and each Monday throughout the 2022 season, fans have been able to view their final season through their eyes as they recap the previous week. On tap this week is our final journal entry of the season from infielder Janeah Finney.
Hey Jag Fans!! It's senior infielder Janeah Finney here to give you the inside scoop on this week's events of hosting the conference tournament.Â
MONDAY
This Monday was different from the previous ones. With school being over, I finally got to sleep in. Meredith [Keel] and I then ran to Target for Starbucks and to see what else we could get into for a little bit. Afterwards, we met KK [Kaitlyn Hughes], Bailey [Welch], and Allie [Hughen] and sat by the pool to enjoy the sun because the weather has been beautiful lately. We are big spur of the moment girls and decided we needed a quick trip to Lululemon. I got the cutest light blue shorts! It wasn't long after that we had to get back for practice/weights. Both of those went great, and then it was time to eat. We had Taco Mama cater for being the second seed for the first time since 2016. We won't be playing until Wednesday evening, so we have plenty of time to mentally prepare for the week. They also announced all-conference teams for the Sun Belt. A huge congratulations to Mackenzie [Brasher], Pepper [Caroline Nichols], and Liv [Olivia Lackie] on making first team, Meredith and Jenna [Hardy] for second team, and Coach [Becky] Clark on Coach of the Year!Â
TUESDAY
For some teams the tournament started today; it was their chance to earn their way into the double elimination tournament. We had the day off until that evening when we had practice at 7. Of course, I slept in. I spent my day just enjoying being off and having some time to myself. I cleaned up my room and apartment and just sat and watched softball all day waiting until it was time to go to the field. We had a great hitting and defensive session and we were thrilled to open up the tournament tomorrow against Georgia State.
WEDNESDAY – GAME DAY – VS. GEORGIA STATE
Our day started as any game day should… with a Yellowhammer run. After sleeping in for a bit… Meredith, Belle, KK and I loaded up in Belle's jeep and headed down to Dauphin Street with the windows down because the weather was beautiful. The coffee didn't make it back to the apartment. It was so good. We had to be at the field ready to go at 4:30, so we decided to get to the field around 3 to start getting ready. We like to go out early and get a game of hacky in. I decided to break out the cowboy hat to get some in team motivation going. When the time came to start the game, Coach brought out a Jag decal to put on the front of the hat. That really hyped everyone up. The game was so much fun… we run-ruled GSU in five innings and started the tournament on a great note. We were the last game of the night so the staff had Carabbas catered. It was yummy!!
THURSDAY – GAME DAY – VS. TEXAS STATE
We didn't get to sleep in too late as we had hoped for, we had to be at the field early to warm up before the game at 1 against Texas State. We were all hyped and knew this game was going to be a tough one. Texas State is a good team. The game went into extra innings, and it was a roller coaster that unfortunately didn't go our way. We would now play Coastal in order to stay in the tournament tomorrow afternoon. This gave us some time to reflect and adjust for tomorrow.Â
FRIDAY – GAME DA Y – VVS. COASTAL CAROLINA
Friday was emotional. Not just for the team, but for the seniors who wouldn't be returning. We were ending our softball career a little earlier than hoped for. That's the way the ball falls sometimes though. We took a couple minutes after the game to reflect and hug our teammates. It was bittersweet. I know the time and commitment each of the seniors have put into this program and it was going to be difficult for us moving forward. Kamdyn [Kvistad], Allie, Kennedy [Cronan], Pepper, Shelby [Sloan], Belle, Kassidy [Wilcox], and I are going to miss this team more than anything and the bond we've established with everyone. With that being said, our season has come to a close. We are so thankful for the support of our Jag fans through this season, and cannot wait to see what next season has in store!! Go Jags!
