MOBILE, Ala. | South Alabama softball head coach
Becky Clark and the program announced its 2023 schedule on Friday. The 52-game slate features 23 home contests, which includes a pair of home tournaments and four Sun Belt Conference series at Jaguar Field.
The Jags, who finished second in the conference last spring, will be tested throughout as 11 opponents reached the postseason, including College World Series participants Northwestern and Mississippi State. Tennessee also advanced to a Super Regional, while Missouri State, Auburn, Lehigh, Princeton and Louisiana made regional appearances, and Rutgers and Bowling Green competed in the National Invitational Softball Championship.
As already announced earlier this fall, the Jaguars will be tested right out of the gate when they compete in the 20th Annual NFCA Division I Leadoff Classic (Feb. 10-12) in Clearwater, Fla. On day one of the three-day showcase, South Alabama will take on Louisville and Northwestern, and then return on day two with two more games – vs. St. John's and Tennessee before closing out play the following day against Indiana. NU ended the year with a 45-13 mark, while UT was also a 41-win team.
Over the next two weekends, South will host a pair of tournaments – Mardi Gras Classic (Feb. 17-19) and South Alabama Invitational presented by Marriott Mobile (Feb. 23-26) – which sandwich a midweek road contest at McNeese State – who won 40 games as well – on Feb. 21. The Jaguars are scheduled to face Rutgers and Missouri State, twice, and a single game versus Mississippi Valley State at the first home tournament, and then face Tulsa, twice, Furman, Louisiana Tech and Mississippi State on the four-day event during the third weekend of the spring.Â
South Alabama will begin the month of March on the road with two more non-conference tournaments. The Jags will compete at the Jane B. Moore Memorial hosted by Auburn on the first weekend of the second month of the season. USA will open with Tennessee Tech and the host Tigers on March 3, and then face Bowling Green and Auburn on day two (March 4), before closing out the weekend against Tennessee Tech on March 5.Â
The Jags will make their second trip of the season to the "Sunshine State" one week later when they compete in The Spring Games (March 10-12) in Madiera Beach, Fla. The Jaguars will have five games at the event, taking on New Mexico State, Iowa, Lehigh, Iona and Princeton. Lehigh won the Patriot League last spring, while Princeton captured both the regular-season and tournament crowns of the Ivy League.
Four of South's eight Sun Belt Conference series will be at Jaguar Field – vs. Georgia State (March 17-19), vs. ULM (March 31-April 2), vs. Appalachian State (March 14-16) and vs. Troy (May 4-6). USA is also scheduled to have league road series at Texas State (March 24-26), at Louisiana (April 6-8), at Georgia Southern (April 21-23) and at first-year Sun Belt member Southern Miss (April 28-30).Â
The Jaguars will also have a home-and-home series with Nicholls State during SBC play, traveling to Thibodaux on March 21 and then hosting the Colonels on April 11.
This year's Sun Belt Conference Championship is scheduled to be held in Lafayette, La. The tournament will be hosted by the Ragin' Cajuns – the defending regular season and tournament champs – and held May 10-13 at Lamson Park.
