Jags’ Season Comes to an End with Doubleheader Split with Troy

TROY, Ala. | South Alabama rallied back from a three-run deficit in game one to pick up a 12-3 victory, but Troy defeated the Jags in the nightcap, 12-2 in five innings Friday at the Troy Softball Complex.

With the loss, South Alabama ends the 2025 season with a 20-31 overall record and a 9-14 mark in Sun Belt play, while Troy moves to 33-23 and 12-12 in the league.

Game 1 | South Alabama 12, Troy 3
The Trojans jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but South Alabama rallied back, scoring all 12 of its runs over the final four innings to even the series with a 12-3 win in game one of the doubleheader.

Gabby Stagner, Sidney Lee and Ansleigh Smith each had two hits, while the first five batters in the Jaguar lineup drove in nine of South's 12 runs. Presley Lively – who walked twice – Stagner, Lee, Smith and Brooklynn Bockhaus also scored two runs each. Olivia Branstetter tied a career high with three RBI.

Ryley Harrison (10-7) entered in relief and tossed 3.2 innings of scoreless, two-hit ball to pick up the win.

How It Happened
•    Cassidy Boltz drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the second and with two outs, Sarah Beth Brake walked to put a pair on. One batter later, the Trojans took the lead when Natalie Tuner's grounder to short was bobbled, allowing Boltz to score (Troy, 1-0). The Trojans then loaded the bases when McKinnon Howard beat the throw to first on an infield single, but Tori Miller struck out Makaley Boswell to hold Troy to the one run.
•    Taylor McKinney lined a double to center to begin the bottom of the third for the Trojans. After working the count full, Caiden Oliva walked, and both runners then moved up a base on a wild pitch. Annie Orman followed with another walk to load the bases, and two batters later, Dailynn Moates was hit by a pitch to bring in a run (Troy, 2-0). Troy added to its lead on a sacrifice fly by Brake (Troy, 3-0).
•    Stagner lined a one-out hit to left – the first hit allowed by Alyssa Faircloth – in the top of the fourth and after advancing to second on a wild pitch, placed runners at second and third after a pair of Trojan errors. With two away, Stephanie Gonzalez lined a double down the third-base line to cut the deficit to one (Troy, 3-2).
•    McKinney drew a leadoff walk in the bottom half of the fourth and Troy put runners at second and third after a single by Oliva who moved up on an errant throw. Orman walked to load the bases, but Ryley Harrison recorded a strikeout and a ground out to short to keep the deficit at one.
•    Bockhaus, Lively and Stagner drew back-to-back-to-back, two-out walks to load the bases in the top of the fifth. Branstetter then singled to right center, scoring both Bockhaus and Lively, South's first lead of the game (USA, 4-3).
•    With one out in the bottom half of the inning, Turner walked and Howard reached on a bloop single to left. The two Trojan base runners moved up a base on a high chopper back to the circle, and Troy loaded the bases for the fourth time after a walk to McKinney, but Harrison was able to get Oliva looking to end the inning and maintain the one-run advantage.
•    Lee extended the Jaguar advantage to 5-3 with her third home run of the season, this one over the wall in left center. Smith then beat out an infield single forcing a pitching change. After another pitching change, Gavin reached on a Trojan throwing error while trying to advance the runner, putting runners at second and third for the Jags. Sophia Mendoza then dropped in a pinch-hit single to shallow center to score Smith from third (USA, 6-3). Lively drew her second walk of the game to load the bases, and Stagner then lined a two-run single to right, extending South's advantage to 8-3. Branstetter plated her third run of the contest one batter later as Lively scored on a ground out to short (USA, 9-3). Amity White lined a ball off the shortstop's glove and Stagner came around to score. After initially being ruled out at the plate, video review reversed the call (USA, 10-3).
•    South added two more runs in its half of the seventh. Lee lined a leadoff single – her second hit of the contest and her sixth multi-hit game of the season – and Smith followed with her second hit of the game, a single through the left side of the infield. The two Jaguar runners were sacrificed over by Gavin, and Lee came in to score on a wild pitch (USA, 11-3). Bockhaus walked on the wild pitch and then moved up to second along with Smith on Troy's fourth error of the game. Lively then dropped in a single just out of reach of short, scoring Smith (USA, 12-3).
