Date: 8/7
Time: 10 a.m.-11:50 a.m. (CDT)
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Helmets and shorts, no pads
Featured Offensive Player of the Day: Antawn Lewis, Jr., OL, West Palm Beach, Fla.
-Offensive coordinator Major Applewhite on Lewis: "Antawn came in in January from Louisiana Tech and immediately gave us some size and some athleticism up front, he mixed in with the O-line culture and the guys who were already here. He has had an exceptional summer, when he came back he was one of the guys [associate head] coach Matt Shadeed pointed out. In the month of May, he made the decision to stay around when a lot of guys go home and see family, he stayed in great shape and has really started to assert himself. Antawn and Trey Simpson — who I have already mentioned — are both guys who have taken a leadership role, he has a tremendous amount of pride in the way that he plays which I'm excited about."
Featured Defensive Player of the Day: Quinton Wilfawn, Jr., ILB, Oxford, Miss.
-Defensive coordinator Corey Batoon on Wilfawn: "I think Quentin has really grown in the offseason this summer in regard to understanding the total scheme of what we are trying to do as a whole 11. In the spring he was essentially focused on his position, but through the course of the summer I really feel like he's built up to where he understands all the pieces — the defensive line, the safeties — need to be and can be a coach and a problem solver on the field. He's really grown in that regard, I'm very proud of the effort he has put in in terms of his understanding of the game more so than just his own position."
Play of the Day: During the first team period, Jaguar quarterback Jake Bentley rolled out to the left and went to throw back to running back Jared Wilson, but redshirt-freshman Brock Higdon leaped up and batted the pass down to prevent a possible big gain.
Team period highlights: Like day one of camp, the first team period of the morning covered perimeter play, while the second ran 20 base plays over the final 12 minutes of the session.
Miscellaneous Notes
-Jalen Tolbert (3) and Allen Dailey Jr. (2) each recorded multiple receptions during the first 10-minute team period.
-Dailey also ended the period with a highlight catch across the middle as he was able to haul in a 19-yard gain after being hit by a defender.
-Wilfawn and Darrell Luter Jr. each recorded three tackles, while Higdon and Keith Gallmon both broke up a pass
-During the seven-on-seven skeleton passing drill, Bentley and Tanner McGee combined to connect on 11 of their first 13 pass attempts.
-The duo finished 17-for-23 during the period and connected with nine different receivers.
-Bentley hit Jalen Wayne for a 38-yard score along the left sideline for the lone score of the drill on the second play of the third series of downs.
-South Alabama ended the day with a 20-play, 12-minute team period consisting of nine run plays and 11 pass plays.
-Bentley and McGee finished the final segment 8-for-11, with McGee finding Jay'juan Townsend for a 35-yard score on the third to last play of the day. Gallmon and Wilfawn each posted a pair of tackles.
-South also went through two specials teams periods focusing on punt coverage and blocking skills during the seven-minute segment, while the second five-minute period worked on punt block/return
-There was also a three-minute session working with the field goal/PAT unit. Sophomore placekicker Diego Guajardo connected on all four of his field goal attempts, including a 48-yarder from the left hash to end the period.
-All practices are closed to the general public.
Head coach Kane Wommack
-On the heat of camp and other variables: "Today was great to get out in the heat and see our guys press through. We always want to introduce new variables as we build as a program. Yesterday, we were in the JTC and today we come right back outside. Tomorrow we will put pads on. Adding those variables and being able to take pressure on and take pressure off is what having a facility like the JTC allows us to do. Heat is one of those variables and we have to use it in the right way."
-On effort seen from the team so far in camp: "The effort and the energy our players have put into spring and summer workouts sets the bar high. I expect them to come out here and execute at a very high level and they have done that to this point. For day one of camp yesterday, the amount of knowledge of what we're trying to get accomplished schematically was good. There were very few bust schematically. What we have to do is continue to build off the schematics and then fine tune all the fundamentals. We talk about knowing what to do so well that how to do it is the overwhelming thought that enters your mind right before the ball is snapped September 4."
-On what he's seen out of Jalen Wayne: "What's fun for me with Jalen Wayne is here's a guy that I helped recruit four or five years ago, and to watch him mature year after year and coming back and seeing the type of player he is now. The effort and leadership that he gave during the summer workouts was really awesome. Early on in his career, he made freshman mistakes and now I see him out here with Caullin Lacey and Jay'juan Townsend correcting them when they make those same mistakes he made when he was a freshman. He has an urgency to get better. There's a hunger within this team and a guy like Jalen is going to push us forward."
-On who's stepped up to lead the offensive line: "I think Tank [Antwan] Lewis has done a phenomenal job of coming into this program. Here's a guy who started at another program and has played considerable reps, but he came here and connected with his teammates. He didn't walk in day one trying to be the leader, but he learned what we're trying to do here, got acclimated to the locker room and then once he earned his right as our right tackle, he's come out and shown leadership. He's done a tremendous job of connecting with his teammates, while at the same time doing the things we need him to do from a leadership perspective."
-On Jamal Brooks: "I'm really impressed with Jamal. Communication is so important to a coach with a defensive coordinator background. Every day, we talk within our defense about being so loud in our communication that it exudes confidence with everybody on the field, while also at the same time being intimidating to our opponents. Jamal is so loud when he gets on that field. He's also a really instinctive player."
Junior RB Terrion Avery
-On how the team has progress through the first two practices: "I felt like we showed good progress today, we were able to do the same work outside that we did in the Jaguar Training Center yesterday even though it was such a hot day."
-On the potential to take over as the starter at running back: "I'm ready for the challenge, I have tried to come in and work hard every day to compete with the other guys because we have a good running back room. You can't slack off any day."
-On the Jaguar offensive line: "They look better, they look real good. Everybody has been buying in to what Coach Wommack wants to do, and if they can do that they will be ok."
Junior WR Jalen Wayne
-On how South has looked so far in practice: "Things are going good, we were moving a lot faster than usual on the second day but that's because of all the things we were doing over the summer. Everyone needs to get adjusted to the heat and make sure they are recovering, if they do that we should be able to get better."
-On the team's receiving corps: "Jalen Tolbert is an amazing receiver downfield, I am trying to follow in his footsteps and we are trying to make sure all these young guys behind us are doing what they have to do to follow our lead so we can keep this culture going. We need to work on our hands and concentration later in practice because we had a lot of drops when our bodies got a little fatigued. But other than that, I think we are doing great."
-On meshing with Jake Bentley: "Usually when you get a new quarterback the chemistry isn't that good, but we put in a lot of hours over the summer and that is showing up right now. He just puts the ball where we want it, which is good for us."
-On his summer preparation for the upcoming season: "Coach Shadeed gave me a bunch of things to work on, and I did that and a lot of extra stuff. I kept putting the time in and have stayed patient, I'm waiting to see what's it's going to do for me this season. I feel good about all the stuff I did over the summer."
Up next: South Alabama will put on the pads for the first time on Sunday with a two-hour workout in the Jaguar Training Center from 10 a.m.-12 p.m.
