JAGS’ MARZOL AND CLOES NAMED ITA DOUBLES ALL-AMERICANS

6/7/2021 3:51:00 PM

INDIANAPOLIS – The University of South Alabama's doubles team No.24 Clément Marzol and Loïc Cloes are the first Jaguars to be honored as ITA Doubles All-Americans since 1998 as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Monday afternoon.

The Doubles All-American title is awarded to the doubles team who obtains a spot in the top eight seed in the NCAA championship, reaches the NCAA championship quarterfinals, or finishes in the top 10 of the final ITA doubles rankings.

No. 24 Cloes and Marzol dominated No. 28 Johannes Ingildsen and Will Grant of No. 2 Florida (6-1, 6-2) on May 24 to be the first Jags to win a round at the NCAA Championship since USA's Jack Baker's defeated formerly ranked No.31 ranked Matthias Wellermann of Ole Miss in 2008.

The duo left their marks in the school record books after becoming the first Jaguars to advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals since 1998 when formerly-ranked No. 11 John James and Claes Westlin beat previously-ranked No.1 Martin Dvorcek and Pavel Kudmac of Oklahoma State, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Atlanta, Ga.

Cloes and Marzol conquered the courts over Trey Hilderbrand and Bogdan Pavel of formerly-ranked No. 5 UCF 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals, where they later fell 6-4, 6-2 against Tennessee's Adam Walton and Pat Harper on May 26.

The doubles partners concluded their collegiate season with an overall 12-3 doubles record.

THEY SAID IT
Head Coach Nick Brochu

- On Cloes and Marzol: "What a great way to close their careers. It's amazing for them and well deserved. It's also great for us to have All-Americans again, with it being a long time since 1998. That's a great accomplishment for the program but an even bigger accomplishment for them, and I am so proud and happy that they chose South Alabama. They are the type of players you recruit and build your team around. They have great potential, work ethic and the will to improve weekly. The fact that they played together for four years is unbelievable. You don't see that often where two players are paired for almost their entire college careers. They synchronized with each other on the courts, and that's why they were so effective. We went to the NCAA and lost to Tennessee. It was a great match, and Tennessee is a great team. I am very happy for them to close their collegiate careers with an All-American award, and that is a great accomplishment."
