NEW ORLEANS – The University of South Alabama track and field programs claimed both Sun Belt Conference Field Athlete of the Week awards, as announced Thursday afternoon by the league office.
Senior Autavia Fluker and redshirt freshman Francois Prinsloo were recognized as the Sun Belt's Field Athletes of the Week after their stellar performances at the Southeastern-Conference Tune Up last Saturday.
Fluker has received the award for the third time this season, while Prinsloo has been honored twice with the award this season.
Senior Fluker was astounding at the Southeastern-Conference Tune Up as she broke her SBC record in the hammer throw for the third time this season with her 67.33m performance. Her mark was more than 11 meters further than her first runner-up.
She also broke the Southeastern Track Complex hammer throw record by 18 feet, where the previous high was 204-10 (62.11m) set by Ashley Jenkins of Sam Houston at the 2015 Southland Outdoor Championship.
The Bessemer, Alabama, native currently ranks No. 8 in the nation in the hammer throw. Fluker also finished second in the shot put with a 14.88m performance at the same meet.
Redshirt freshman Prinsloo earned his sixth victory in the discus throw this season after throwing a career-best distance of 60.17m at the Southeastern-Conference Tune-Up. Prinsloo currently ranks No. 6 in the nation in the discus throw, with his mark being the second-best throw in school history.
The Worcester, South Africa native also recorded a hammer throw PR of 57.32m to place second at the same meet.
The Jaguars will host the Sun Belt Outdoor Championship at Jaguar Track in Mobile, Ala.
