ORLANDO – The University of South Alabama's doubles team Clément Marzol and Loïc Cloes continued making USA history by being the first Jaguars to advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals since 1998 after defeating No.5 Trey Hilderbrand and Bogdan Pavel of No. 10 UCF Tuesday afternoon at the NCAA Doubles Championship at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
Formerly-ranked Jaguars No. 11 John James and Claes Westlin defeated previously-ranked No.1 Martin Dvorcek and Pavel Kudmac of Oklahoma State, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in 1998 in Atlanta, Ga.
"What a great match," said Brochu. "Number one, UCF is an exceptional team and is ranked No. 5 in the nation. They had an unbelievable season with unbelievable wins. Not only to beat them but to beat them in straight sets is quite an accomplishment. The second accomplishment is that we didn't get broken at all today. Today was straightforward with extremely solid play from our players."
Marzol and Cloes were a force to be reckoned with on the courts as they dominated Hilderbrand and Pavel 7-5, 6-4 in round 16 of the NCAA Doubles Championship. The duo broke out the gates swinging to keep UCF Knights' Hilderbrand and Pavel on their toes in the opening set. The battle was tied 5-5 against the two teams, but the Jaguars used their service game to win the set with a 7-5 result.
"The first set was such a powerful set with all four players serving exceptionally," stated Brochu. "We didn't see a breakpoint until it was five-all, and UCF was serving. As soon as we got the first breakpoint, we took advantage of it and broke them right away. That was the only break point throughout the entire game. We stayed solid mentally, and we hit the right targets.
UCF was not about to go down without a fight as they took the lead (4-3) midway through the second set, but seniors Marzol and Cloes put an end to the threat scoring the final three points for a roaring 7-5, 6-4 victory.
"Those were two good opponents, and we came up with a solid plan of which target to hit," said Brochu. "We stuck to the plan, and we did an awesome job. We were able to find the weakness in their game and were able to exploit it. It worked out well, and I am extremely proud of them. We knew we would be able to go this far in this tournament, but it's such an amazing feeling when it does happen. They've worked so hard for the past five years, and now it's paying off. We're going to have a good meal, get some rest, and prepare for tomorrow."
The doubles team is heading into the NCAA Quarterfinals with an overall 12-2 overall record.
"Tomorrow, we have another big challenge as we're playing a team we've never played before, No. 4 Tennessee," said Brochu. "We just have to go at it, be ourselves and play our game because that's the best chance we have to beat them. We're looking forward to tomorrow, and I am very excited for them to make history again for the Jags."
The Jags will hit the courts tomorrow at 5 p.m. (CT) for another great battle against Adam Walton and Pat Harper of No. 4 Tennessee.
