ORLANDO – The University of South Alabama's doubles team Clément Marzol and Loïc Cloes are the first Jags to win a round at the NCAA Championship since Jaguar Jack Baker's triumph over formerly ranked No.31 ranked Matthias Wellermann of Ole Miss in 2008.
The nation's 44th-ranked doubles team Marzol and Cloes, kept the doubles magic alive in a great battle against No. 28 Johannes Ingildsen and Will Grant of No. 2 Florida Monday afternoon, advancing to round 16 of the NCAA Doubles Championship.
"What a performance.," said Brochu. "With them being seniors, this is the last tournament of their college career. They put everything on the line, and this is an awesome feeling. They were focused the entire match. They only played one bad game in the entire match where they got broken in the second set after a few mistakes on that game. When you look back, and you've only played one bad game, that's pretty exceptional."
Marzol and Cloes were all business in the first set as they cruised to a 6-1 decision to take the lead against Gators Ingildsen and Grant. The seniors seemed right at home as they emerged triumphantly in the second set to seal the win with a 6-1, 6-2 decision.
"Florida is a tough team," said Brochu. "They have so much experience and multiple great players. I know Clément [Marzol] and Loïc [Cloes] have played players from Florida many times in the past three years, so getting this win tastes so good. I'm so happy for them, and they deserve everything right now."
In their second year in NCAA Doubles action, the duo earned the first NCAA victory of their careers as a pair. Marzol and Cloes improved their overall doubles record to 11-2 with the win.
"I'm so excited for the second round, and it's going to be tough," Brochu stated. There are no easy tournaments, and I am very proud of them for being the first Jags to win a round at the NCAA's since 2008. That's a great accomplishment, so I'm looking forward to getting another win tomorrow. I believe they can go all the way."
The doubles team will take on No. 5-8 seeded Trey Hilderbrand and Bogdan Pavel of UCF in round 16 of the NCAA Doubles Championships Tuesday at 5 p.m. (CT) at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
