NEW ORLEANS – The Sun Belt Conference announced the winners of the league's 2020-21 postseason awards on Wednesday afternoon. The University of South Alabama women's tennis team landed a pair of individual awards and had four Jaguars earn All-Sun Belt honors.
Senior Yu Fujioka was named the Sun Belt's Women's Tennis Player of the Year for the second time in her career with the Jags. She was previously given the honor during her sophomore year in the 2018-19 season. Fujioka was also named to the first-team all-Sun Belt in singles. She currently holds an overall 15-4 record in singles this spring, with a 14-4 mark coming at the No. 1 position and eight victories ending in straight sets. The Funabashi, Japan, native has a 6-1 record in league play and is second in the Sun Belt in win percentage at the No. 1 flight (.857).
In singles, senior Nikola Kohoutova was named to the first-team all-Sun Belt in singles, while freshman Otoha Aoki was named Freshman of the Year and honored to second-team all-Sun Belt in singles. Kohoutova finished the season with a 14-4 overall singles record, with a 12-2 mark at No. 2 flight and nine wins finishing in straight sets. The Kralupy nad Vltavou, Czech Republic, native played to a perfect 7-0 record in league play, with all seven wins coming on court two.
Freshman Otoha Aoki closed out the season with an overall 17-2 singles record, with 12 wins coming in straight sets. She went 9-0 in conference play for the league's best record and finished the season on an 11-match winning streak. The Komaki, Japan, native is top in the league at the No. 4 position with a 5-0 record and third (2-0) at the No. 5 position.
Doubles team Aoki and Aina Domingo-Bernabeu were selected as the league's first-team all-Sun Belt after their impressive performance this season. The doubles pair won nine of their 13 doubles matches this season at the No. 3 position. They also hold the best record in the league, with a perfect 7-0 record in conference play.
Doubles team Kohoutova and Fujioka were one of the three teams selected as the second-team all-Sun Belt. The duo recorded an overall 12-4 record in doubles play with an 11-2 mark at No. 2. They currently have a 5-2 record in conference play with a .714 winning percentage.
