NEW ORLEANS – University of South Alabama junior Nikola Kohoutova was recognized by the conference as the Sun Belt Conference Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week for the first time in her career after her stellar performances last weekend.
Kohoutova was 2-0 in singles and doubles play as she recorded wins against Georgia Southern and Georgia State. In South's first match of the weekend, Kohoutova and Yu Fujioka teamed up to beat Georgia Southern's Elizabeth Goines and Sonja Keranen 6-3 on court two to guide USA in doubles play. Kohoutova then extended the Jags' lead to 2-0 after swiftly defeating Sophie Wagemaker of Georgia Southern 6-2, 6-1 on court two.
During the Jaguars' 4-0 upset over the Panthers, doubles team Kohoutova and Fujioka notched another doubles victory after defeating Georgia State's Angel Carney and Maddy Frediani 6-3 on court two, clinching the doubles point for the Jags. The Kralupy nad Vltavou, Czech Republic, native closed the weekend with her singles victory over GSU's Angel Carney, coming in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) on court two in the Jaguar win.
The junior was one of the two players on the Jaguar roster this past weekend to collect four wins. Kohoutova ended the regular season undefeated in singles conference play with a 7-0 record, with all her singles victories coming at the No. 2 position.
Kohoutova and the Jaguars will compete in the Sun Belt Championships on April 16-18 at the Peachtree City Tennis Center in Peachtree City, Ga.
