UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA FOOTBALL SPRING PRACTICE REPORT – 3/27

3/27/2021 1:32:00 PM

Date: 3/27
Time: 10 a.m.-12 p.m. (CDT)
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Full pads

Featured Offensive Player of the Day: Caullin Lacy, Fr., WR, Mobile, Ala.
-Offensive coordinator Major Applewhite on Lacy: "Caullin is a dynamic player who is explosive with the ball in his hands.  I am so impressed with his effort, he and Cade [Sutherland] have stood out to me through the first five days of practice.  We are going to do everything we can to get the ball in Caullin's hands, I have not only been pleased with the way he gives great effort but with what he has learned thus far."

Featured Defensive Player of the Day: Chris Henderson, Sr., OLB, Hampton, Ga.
-Defensive coordinator Corey Batoon on Henderson: "Chris is a very talented pass rusher, he had some really good production last year.  He has long arms and a really good first step, he can bend the corner and he runs very, very well.  I've been most impressed with him in terms of how far he has come in the run game, being physical with his hands and taking pride in the physicality of the run game.  He is really striking people right now with his hands and using his leverage, he has made strides in being more of a complete player; we're excited to see his continued growth."

Play of the Day: In the final team period of the day, Jake Bentley was able to drop a pass over the cornerback in coverage to allow Jalen Tolbert to make a one-handed grab for a big gain down the sideline.

Team period highlights: Work in the three team periods of the morning included a focus on the offense's run game, calls against the blitz and third-down plays.

Miscellaneous Notes
-This marked the first time this spring that the Jaguars have practiced in full pads.
-The Jags went through individual, group and installation periods for the first half of the practice session.
-After recording four carries each during the initial team period of the day, AJ Phillips would go on to catch three passes while Terrion Avery and Jared Wilson caught two balls each.
-Keith Gallmon and A.J. DeShazor each intercepted a pass during the two team periods that followed to record the Jaguar defense's takeaways in the practice.
-CJ Rias posted a sack in each of the last two team periods of the morning, with Trey Kiser and Yam Banks adding sacks as well.
-Lacy and Cade Sutherland paced USA's offense with four catches each in the second half of the workout, while Tolbert and Jay'juan Townsend also hauled in three receptions apiece.
-Three Jaguar quarterbacks — Bentley, Tanner McGee and Desmond Trotter — were a combined 30-of-45 passing in team and skeleton passing drill periods; that included Bentley opening the final team period of the day with four consecutive completions, with the last two going to Lacy.
-Diego Guajardo's 47-yard field goal was the longest converted by a Jaguar kicker during a brief special teams period late in the practice.
-South also worked on kickoff return fundamentals in two other special teams periods throughout the morning.
-All practices are closed to the general public.

THEY SAID IT
Head coach Kane Wommack
-On the practice Saturday morning: "We didn't go live today, I feel like we still have to build up to that point.  I didn't think we responded well enough on a Saturday morning, I think this team needs to learn how to push through adversity, this was a great opportunity as a teaching moment.  If they respond with the right mindset I think we'll see them practice on Tuesday with some urgency, but I did not think we had enough urgency today."
-On Quinton Wilfawn: "I like the way he prepares, he has an urgency to get better and is very coachable; he not only understands the game, but he is learning the game better and better every single play.  He has a really nice skillset physically and he runs to the ball, his effort is great.  If we can continue to teach him the game within the framework of what we're doing defensively we'll be very pleased with his production this season."
-On the team's running backs: "They are a really hungry group right now, they are pushing hard.  Most of the mistakes they have made is in protection — we have to continue to work on those things — but when they get the ball there is an urgency to get downhill and to protect the football.  I like that group, I think we have a bunch of good guys who are trying to do things the right way."
-On Jalen Tolbert: "Jalen has played a lot of football, it shows out here in practices.  He has a workmanlike mindset in the way that he prepares off the field, he is constantly studying and watching film and asking questions.  We have a coaching staff that teaches the game through questions, Jalen is someone who responds to that and is starting to engage the younger guys to teach them.  That's probably the most exciting thing; he's not just bringing himself along, he is bringing the rest of his teammates along and that's what we need from a leader like Jalen who has played as much as he has."

Up next: After a pair of days off, the Jaguars will return to action with a workout at the James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
