JAGUARS’ FLOWERS IS FINALIST FOR LOU HENSON AWARD

3/25/2021 3:59:00 PM

BOSTON – CollegeInsider.com has announced that the University of South Alabama's Michael Flowers is one of 30 finalists for the organization's Lou Henson National Player-of-the-Year Award.

Presented annually to the top mid-major player in NCAA Division I college basketball, it honors the former Illinois and New Mexico State head coach who won 775 games in 41 seasons.  The winner of the award will be announced on April 1.

Flowers — a senior guard who hails from Southfield, Mich. — posted averages of 21 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.6 steals per game for the Jaguars after transferring from Western Michigan, as he shot 38.8 percent from beyond the three-point arc and 81.8 percent at the free-throw line in leading the Sun Belt Conference in scoring.  He also paced the league in three-point field goals and free throws made as well as with 3.14 three-pointers per contest, and was fourth in both three-point field-goal and free-throw percentage, seventh in assists per outing and ninth in steals per game.

Not only did Flowers score 20-plus points on 14 occasions — highlighted by four outings with 30 or more — he finished with a double-digit point total in 26 of the Jags' 28 games while helping lead the program to a 17-11 overall mark.  After recording 32 points against Georgia State the final weekend of the regular season, he scored a season-best 34 to help South rally for an eight-point victory over ULM in the opening round of the SBC Tournament.

The Sun Belt Conference Newcomer of the Year and a first-team all-conference selection, Flowers was also voted first-team all-district by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and was named to the Sun Belt's all-tournament team as well this month.
