JAGS MEN'S BASKETBALL EXTENDS WIN STREAK TO SEVEN, BEATS APP STATE

BOONE, N.C. – The Jags extended their win streak to seven games as the University of South Alabama men's basketball team snatched a 65-63 victory over Appalachian State Friday evening at the Holmes Convocation Center.

Four Jaguars (15-8, 9-5) were in double figures, paced by Michael Flowers with 19 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. John Pettway and Tyreke Locure each had 15 points. Jamal West notched 10 points with three rebounds and two blocks. Kayo Goncalves grabbed eight rebounds, as one of three Jags to grab eight or more.

Justin Forrest registered 20 points, three rebounds and an assist for the Mountaineers (12-8, 6-5), with Michael Almonacy putting up 15 points and Donovan Gregory knocking down 14 points.

GAME FACTS
- The offenses were alive early as the first five baskets were threes, with the home team going up 9-6 three minutes 33 seconds into the game. Locure and Pettway made the first two for the Jaguars
- The defenses stiffened up at the first half entered the stretch with the Mountaineers leading 21-19 at the 6:05 mark. Forrest had nine for the home team and Locure had eight to lead the visiting Jaguars.
- Flowers put USA into the lead with 16 seconds left in the half, but App State converted a layup on the other end as time expired to take a 30-29 advantage into the break at halftime.
- South took a one-point lead into the under-12 media break, 44-43, after Goncalves connected on his first made three of the evening with 11:44 remaining.
- The Jag offense roared to life down the stretch notching a 13-2 run over three minutes and 12 seconds. Flowers scored seven of the 13 points with Locure knocking down a three to start the run with West earning three points off a layup and a foul.
- The Jaguars went into a four-minute offense to kill the clock and close out the game but the Mountaineers closed the gap to two points and had a few chances to take the lead late, but South hung on to snag a 65-63 win.
- South surrendered 18 second-chance points to the Mountaineers and only produced two.
- The Mountaineers were held below 30 percent from the field and behind the arc, but benefited from 23 made free throws.
- The home side won the rebound battle 44-39, but South won the battle in the paint, scoring 30 points to App's 20.
- USA was forced into 17 turnovers, which ties a season high.

NOTES
- South Alabama has now won seven in a row, and is one game shy of tying the eight game win streak to close out the 2019-20 season.
- USA has guaranteed a minimum of a tie in the season series with Appalachian State and notched its 11th win in the overall series with the Mountaineers. The Jaguars have won five straight in Boone.
- Michael Flowers tied his season high of seven assists with the previous seven happening the last time the Jaguars played the Mountaineers (1/16). The mark also tied his career high set while at Western Michigan.
- Flowers has led the team in rebounds four times this year, including two of the last three games.
- Pettway has scored in double figures five of the last seven games, all in Sun Belt Conference play. In the last three, the Safford, Ala., native has registered 14 points or more.
- Locure has recorded double-digit scoring in every conference game except one in a return from an ankle injury. With 14 points today, Locure has averaged 16.7 points-per-game over the last seven games.
- Goncalves has collected eight or more rebounds in four games over the course of the win streak.
- West scored in double digits for the first time since scoring 10 against Georgia Southern (1/22).

Up next: South Alabama will stay in Boone, N.C., for one more road game against the Mountaineers. Saturday's tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. (CST).
